Denney, a third round pick in the 2013 draft, spent the 2013 season with the Red Sox' affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. He didn't hit well there and admitted his approach got out of whack in the transition to the pro game from how he was pitched to in high school. He projects as power hitter, though none of it was on display in the GCL. As with many young catchers, there's a battle for Denney to improve defensively while being a threat with the bat. We see him lining up with Low-A Greenville to start the 2014 season.

"Our first responsibility is to try to help our players in any way we can," said Cherington. "There are some things that happened that shouldn't have happened, and he's got to address those things before he can play baseball again."
