RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2016

There was no outlook written for Carlos Peguero.

2015

Peguero earned himself a September callup in 2014 after logging 30 home runs at Triple-A Omaha, but only saw nine at-bats with the big league club. Although an isolated power mark of .296 in the minors last year seems intriguing, it's a little less desirable when paired with a 33 percent strikeout rate. His struggles to make contact make him a potential power option off the bench in a best-case scenario, but Peguero is likely better suited to provide organizational depth at the minor league level in his age-28 season. He'd need several injuries and a hot streak to work his way into fantasy relevance, even in deeper AL-only leagues.

2014

Peguero's time with the Mariners is likely finished as he is out of minor-league options and seemingly has no shot of making the 25-man roster this season. Despite the strong power potential, Peguero is not a major-league hitter, as his 66 percent contact rate and 31 percent strikeout rate at Triple-A Tacoma last season attest. The Mariners were decimated by injuries last season and yet he still only saw a week-long callup, playing two games in April. He'll probably latch on somewhere as minor-league depth.

2013

Peguero is 26 and not getting any closer to becoming a major-league hitter. A knee injury delayed his season, but when he got going last year, it was a familiar story - he slugged at Triple-A (21 homers in 76 games) only to get to Seattle and struggle mightily with plate discipline, pitch recognition and swinging for the fences on every pitch. In 17 games, he struck out in half of his at-bats (28 K in 56 AB) with one walk. The only way he gets to Seattle this year is if the Mariners have an outfield emergency.

2012

Peguero isn't a major league hitter just yet, but the Mariners were desperate for a body in left field last season, so Peguero got a shot. The Mariners hope with more minor league seasoning he can develop into a big leaguer. But that won't happen unless he improves his plate discipline and pitch recognition and stops swinging for the fence on every pitch. He totaled 54 strikeouts in 46 games last season with the Mariners and walked only eight times. Peguero has power (six homers), but he slugged only .371. The Mariners have more, and better, outfield options this season, and it would benefit Peguero to stay at Triple-A.
