RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2017

There was no outlook written for Ben Paulsen.

2016

Paulsen took advantage of an injury to Justin Morneau and hit .277/.326/.462 in 116 plate appearances, a heavily Coors-inflated batting line. Paulsenís .847 OPS at Coors Field was 129 points better than his mark on the road, and he struck out in an absurd 31.1 percent of plate appearances away from home. The 28-year-old Paulsen has had the look of a quad-A player throughout his minor league career; he's hit as many as 20 home runs in the minor leagues, but lacks the bat to stick at first and the glove to stick in a corner-outfield spot in the majors. Still, he can rack up some fantasy-worthy numbers while playing in Coors Field. Even if plenty of minor leaguers could do the same job, Paulsenís the one with the opportunity.

2015

Paulsen looked to be written off as a potential big leaguer after supplying mediocre production across his first four seasons in the minors, but heís put himself back on the radar since reaching the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League in 2013. Heís slashed a cumulative .293/.361/.528 over 999 plate appearances at Triple-A over the past two seasons, parlaying those achievements into his first promotion to the big leagues last July. Paulsenís successes didnít stop once he joined the Rockies, as he ended up delivering comparable numbers (.919 OPS in 64 plate appearances) while serving mostly as a fill-in at first base and right field. Paulsen surely benefited from calling Coors Field home, but he still earns credit for performing better than many of the other Triple-A hitters the Rockies brought in last season. While Paulsenís limited positional flexibility hurts his chances of landing a reserve role for the Rockies in 2015, he could rank among the teamís first callups if Justin Morneau or a corner outfielder succumbs to injury.
