2024 Fantasy Outlook
Falter was flipped from Philadelphia at the trade deadline in 2023, though his role, workload and skill all remained nearly identical before and after the trade. He threw a total of 80.2 uninspiring innings in the majors, as he saw his velocity dip to the lowest mark of his career (90.9), with a corresponding dip in swinging strike rate (7.9 percent) and strikeout rate (17.3 percent). Even on a team with a relatively uninspiring group of starters, it's unlikely that Falter will be able to earn anything more than spot starts and a bullpen role. Though he's not a closer of the future, Falter has had more success in relief in his career, holding opponents to a .303 wOBA with 52 strikeouts across 56.2 innings. He could turn into a relatively successful multi-inning reliever, though the fantasy value of that in most league formats is minimal. Read Past Outlooks

Allows two homers in no-decision
Falter did not factor into the decision, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Sunday against the Rockies. He struck out three.
ANALYSIS
Falter allowed three consecutive extra-base hits, including back-to-back homers, in the second inning, resulting in three runs crossing the plate. However, he was able to keep the Pirates in the game, working his way through 5.1 frames without allowing any additional damage. Falter has tossed at least five innings in six of seven starts this season while allowing three or fewer runs in five of those games for an ERA of 4.34 with a quality 1.02 WHIP. Despite his general effectiveness, Falter's spot in the rotation appears shaky as Pirates top-prospect Paul Skenes also pitched Sunday in Triple-A with a call to the majors likely not far off for the highly-touted righty. When Skenes does receive the call, it will likely be either Falter or Quinn Priester who is likely to lose a rotation spot with the currently injured Marco Gonzales also muddying up the waters further if he eventually returns from a forearm issue that's kept him sidelined since April 14.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Set for Friday's start
Falter will start Friday against the Cardinals, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Falter has been working as the team's sixth starter all season long, and he will be recalled after Zach Eflin landed on the injured list with a bruised knee. There's a chance Eflin stays sidelined until after the All-Star break, though, and if that's the case, then Falter would stay with the big-league club for more than one start. Falter has gone between three and five innings in his last three MLB appearances, registering a 4.26 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 10 strikeouts in 12.2 innings over that stretch.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Falter spent last season as the Phillies' sixth starter and was needed in the rotation for roughly half the year, making 16 starts and four relief appearances. The results were perfectly respectable for the second-year lefty, as he finished the year with a 3.86 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 84 innings of work. He didn't provide much in the strikeout category, but his 21.2 K% was close enough to league average and paired well with his 4.9 BB%. Throwing that many strikes is a good thing, but allowing plenty of contact can be an issue at cozy Citizens Bank Park. His 1.7 HR/9 overall was poor, and that number spiked to 2.1 at home, leading to a 5.49 ERA. Falter's 31.7% groundball rate was sixth-lowest among pitchers who threw at least 80 innings, so don't expect those homer problems to disappear any time soon. Still, if he's able to win a rotation spot, his control is good enough to make him usable in the right spots, especially on the road.
