Willie Green joins his fifth team in his 11th NBA season. The 33-year-old guard averaged 5.0 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.2 blocks in 16 minutes per game through 55 games played last season. Green shot 38 percent from the field on 4.9 attempts and 82 percent from the line on 0.6 attempts. He was an afterthought in the Los Angeles Clippers' backcourt rotation last season after starting 60 games the year prior. Green suffered through a career-low scoring campaign, marred by his first sub-40-percent shooting performance in nine seasons. It was just two years ago that he shot 43 percent from three (tied for 10th with Mike Dunleavy), owning the corner three at a 48-percent clip. Green's valuable trait, other than exemplary locker room guy, is his ability to move without the ball, roaming through screens, keeping his defender occupied. The Magic are deep at shooting guard, even with the departure of Arron Afflalo, making minutes difficult to come by.
Green, who started 60 games last season, provides the Clippers with a calming veteran presence. With the team's wing acquisitions this offseason, Green is expected to play much less this year, limiting his potential fantasy contribution to scrap minutes.
Green will step in to play the role of the shooter. The Clippers lost Nick Young, Randy Foye, and Mo Williams in the offseason, who all have quality jumpers from three-point land. Green may not play a ton of minutes, but getting to be on the floor with Chris Paul could seriously help with his efficiency and could lead to a bunch of wide-open looks from the perimeter.
he Hornets acquired Green in an offseason trade with Philadelphia. He'll add depth in the backcourt and provide a nice shooter’s touch off the bench after shooting 46 percent from the field and 83 percent from the line. While he now joins a deep group of shooting guards, his shooting ability and blue-collar style of play could earn him some points with coach Monty Williams.
It's hard to write off Green's fantasy impact, as he always seems to play significant minutes for his team while deftly muting the potential of other fantasy contributors.
Green should see a significant reduction in playing time this season. With Young sliding into the small forward spot in the starting rotation, Iguodala will start at shooting guard every game and that pushes Green to the bench. He could create a time share with Williams, but the Detroit native has never been much more than a bench player.
Green played just under 25 minutes per game in his fourth season and averaged 11.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. The potential has always been there, but he hasn't been able to become more than a role player for the 76ers. Look for much of the same this upcoming season with Louis Williams pushing for a bigger role.
Green will look to regain the promise that he showed at times during the 2004-05 season while playing in his first full season since major knee surgery. In the 2004-05 season without Allen Iverson in the lineup (7 games), Green averaged a team-leading 18.0 points along with 5.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. Green has worked extremely hard in the offseason to make sure that he is not only fully recovered from his knee injury, but even better than before. He finished last season strong and should be ready to take on a much larger role with the team.
Green, a restricted free-agent guard, had figured prominently in the Sixers' plans and had even agreed to a 5-year contract that would have been worth about $17 million. But Green suffered a knee injury before he was able to officially sign and had reconstructive surgery. It would seem unlikely that he would be able to resume playing this season.
With Eric Snow gone, Green may get a chance to be Allen Iverson's running mate and form an undersized, but lightning quick backcourt.
Green can score a bit and shoot the three, but he's not quite a point guard, and not quite a shooting guard, either, though he plays a little bit of both. He'll sit at the end of the bench this season.
