RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014-15

Subscribe now to see our 2014-15 outlook.

2013-14

Lawson has made steady improvement in each year of his NBA career and has posted new career highs in points, assists and steals in four straight seasons. He was particularly effective in the second half of the 2012-13 season, averaging just under 19 points per game and shooting 50 percent from the floor, helping to carry a team decimated by injuries into the playoffs. Still just 25 years old, Lawson has room for continued improvement and could be aided by the arrival of new coach Brian Shaw, who was instrumental to the development of players like Paul George as an assistant with the Pacers. One note of caution – Lawson and his girlfriend were involved in a domestic disturbance in August, a situation that could lead to league discipline and one that may not be resolved in time for training camp.

2012-13

Lawson flourished in his first season as a full-time starter, posting career-highs in nearly all per game categories. Thanks to a bump in playing time of about 8.5 minutes per game, Lawson attempted four more shots per game, allowing his scoring to rise nearly five points per game from the season before. He showed even more scoring savvy in the playoffs, averaging 19 points on 51.4 percent shooting in the first-round series loss to the Lakers. The 24-year-old enters his fourth NBA season with even higher expectations, as he’ll have a bevy of options at his disposal to potentially increase his assist numbers. He’ll enjoy a full season playing alongside Wilson Chandler (signed midseason following a stint in China), JaVale McGee (acquired in a mid-season trade with Washington), and most notably, Andre Iguodala (acquired from the 76ers in the four-team Dwight Howard trade). Lawson will undoubtedly be an integral part of a high-octane Nuggets offense that should be the league’s highest scoring team.

2011-12

Lawson took over as Denver’s starting point guard after Chauncey Billups was traded to New York. He thrived in the role, averaging just under 15 points and seven assists in 31 games, but was held back to some extent by the presence of Raymond Felton, who came over from the Knicks in the Billups trade and who was eager to take back a starting job. General manager Masai Ujiri solved that problem in the offseason, dealing Lawson to the Trail Blazers and bringing back Andre Miller, a past-his-prime but still effective point guard who should, theoretically, be more willing to serve as a backup. It’s unclear if Miller will be happy with that arrangement – he was decidedly unhappy when asked to come off the bench in Portland – but with just a year remaining on his contract, he won’t be in a position to challenge Lawson’s first-team status.

2010-11

Lawson will be the club’s No. 2 point guard heading into 2010-11 and for good reason. He quickly showed himself to be far better than original backup Anthony Carter last year, especially over the latter half of the season when he averaged 10.0 ppg, 3.2 apg, 1.8 rpg, 0.7 spg and only 1.3 topg in 20 minutes a night. While he was inexplicably shelved during the playoffs last year by interim head coach Adrian Dantley, George Karl is back in charge now, and he loves the North Carolina speedster. We expect similar numbers as he backs up Billups, but that could all change if Anthony gets shipped.

2009-10

Lawson comes in with big expectations and a chance to learn from two good veterans (Billups and Carter). How fast he learns and whether or not Karl relaxes his usual disdain for rookies will dictate just how involved gets. Our money is on Lawson making a big splash and ultimately passing an aging Carter on the depth chart sometime after the all-star break.
