A few years from now, you’ll see Araujo’s name as part of some meaningless transaction, and you’ll be amazed that the Raptors took him with the 8th overall selection in the 2004 draft. Araujo was given an opportunity last season, but averaged just 13.8 minutes per game in his 41 starts. The only other true center on the roster is Loren Woods, so Araujo could get another chance this season, but we see another year of platooning between the two.
The Raptors surprised many onlookers by reaching for Araujo with the 8th pick this year, but at 6’11”, 290 lbs. he gives the team exactly what they need – size in the middle. He’ll never be a big scorer, but Toronto doesn’t need offense from him, just toughness and rebounding, qualities he possess in abundance. Coach Mitchell will force-feed Araujo all the playing time he can handle, and while he could provide 7-8 rebounds a night, that’s likely to be the only fantasy category he helps you in.
Araujo's an aggressive rebounder and his solid frame allows him to hold his position in the post. He runs pretty well for a big man and is a pretty good free-throw shooter. His lateral quickness, leaping ability, and overall agility leave something to be desired. His aggressiveness often gets him into early foul trouble. Look for him to go between picks 10 and 20 in the draft.
