RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2015-16

There was no outlook written for Austin Daye.

2014-15

Austin Daye will be starting his first full season in San Antonio after coming over from the Toronto Raptors in a trade for Nando de Colo last February. He's a five-year NBA veteran and averaged 3.0 points, 1.2 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.2 steals, 0.2 blocks, and 0.6 three-pointers in seven minutes per game through 22 games last season. Daye played sparingly for Toronto and performed decidedly better once arriving in San Antonio. As a member of the Spurs, Daye averaged 4.1 points, 1.4 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.3 steals, 0.3 blocks, and 0.9 three-pointers in eight minutes per game. Overall, Daye shot 35 percent from the field on 3.1 attempts per game and 60 percent from the line on 0.5 attempts per game. A former lottery pick of the Detroit Pistons, Daye has tantalized with his multi-category fantasy abilities in the past but has never been able to solidify himself in a rotation long enough to become a fantasy-relevant player in standard leagues. He has the ability to averaged over one steal, block, and three-pointer per game guy if given the minutes, but when you're shooting 35 percent from the field, it's hard for any coach to justify giving you minutes in the NBA. The minutes likely won't be there. Daye did look very impressive in Las Vegas for the Spurs' summer league squad, averaging 16.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.0 steals, 0.7 blocks, and 1.5 three-pointers in 28 minutes per game through six games. Daye only played over 20 minutes in one game last season, and he dropped 22 points, including six three-pointers, two steals, and two blocks against the hapless Sixers in a late-season game that didn't mean diddly-Daye squat to the Spurs. If it's a night where the Spurs are sitting starters and Daye is going to get minutes, he has the ability to fill up the box score, but apart from that, he can be left on the wire in most league formats.

2013-14

Daye has just about run out of chances to establish himself as an NBA regular and will probably spend most of his nights in Toronto at the end of the bench on as a Coach's Decision DNP.

2012-13

Daye’s shine has faded after he was given an opportunity to establish himself in the Pistons’ rotation each of the past two years and failed. The 24-year-old swingman struggled with his shot last season, hitting just 32.2 percent on way to a scoring average of 4.7 points in 15 mpg. Daye still has the ability to a contributor in multiple fantasy categories (threes, steals, blocks), but he hasn’t been able to play with enough consistency to warrant much playing time. Unless the light bulb goes off this year, Daye could be stuck near the end of the Pistons’ bench for the majority of the season.

2011-12

The lanky (6-11, 200) forward out of Gonzaga was given a chance to flash some of his potential during the 2010-11 season, averaging 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.5 threes while shooting 42.6 percent from the floor and 87.1 percent from the line in 16 starts. With Prince returning, Daye looks primed for backup duty once again, but his versatility will allow him to see action at the two, three or four. We might be another year or two away from a full-fledged breakout, but Daye remains one of the more intriguing young talents on the Pistons’ roster.

2010-11

It's rare you'll find players who are classified just as often as shooting guards as power forwards. Boris Diaw comes to mind; maybe Jared Jeffries, too. The 6-11, 200-pound Daye is also on that list. Drafted 15th overall in 2009, Daye's physical gifts made him attractive to the Pistons. The problem is, looking around the Detroit roster, it's difficult to find enough minutes to make Daye relevant this season. The Pistons have Richard Hamilton and Ben Gordon at the two; Tayshaun Prince and newcomer Tracy McGrady at the three; and Charlie Villanueva, Chris Wilcox and Jason Maxiell at the four. Nor does that even account for last year's second-round pick, forward Jonas Jerebko, who averaged 28 minutes per game and was named to the All-Rookie second team. The minutes Daye did receive last season were largely a result of rampant injury problems. It'll take something like that again for Daye to reveal his strengths. Until then, he's probably a speculative late-round pick at best.

2009-10

The Pistons surprised many analysts when they selected Daye with the 15th overall selection in this year's draft. At 6-11, the power forward has the height to be competitive at the NBA level, but his thin frame (200 pounds) is cause for concern. Daye is considered a project that will take a few years to develop, but a solid showing in the Las Vegas Summer League could have speeded up his timetable to contribute. Look for the Pistons to be cautious with Daye early in the season, but he could earn some playing time later in the year.
