Colin Kaepernick: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Kaepernick and the 49ers agreed upon a six-year extension with $61 million guaranteed Wednesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

The true figures have yet to emerge, but the guaranteed money is the largest haul in NFL history. Considering incentives, Kaepernick can earn up to $126 million total during the deal, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. However, on a more important note, the services of the 26-year-old quarterback have now been secured by the 49ers through the likely prime years of his career.
Kaepernick is expected to resume negotiations on a long-term contract extension this week, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Kaepernick is expected to have a new deal locked up by the time training camp begins. After initial discussions were put on hold in April following Kaepernick's involvement in an ongoing investigation in Miami, a positive resolution expected to be forthcoming has the 49ers ready to solidify Kaepernick as their signal-caller for years to come. Recent moves have opened up room under the salary cap to ink Kaepernick at market value for a quarterback of his caliber, which should ultimately result in him earning nearly $20 million per season.
Contract talks between the 49ers and Kaepernick are reportedly on hold for now, NFL.com reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

The report indicates that the two sides would like to get a deal done before the start of the 2014 regular season, with Matt Maiocco of csnbayarea.com suggesting that the 49ers are inclined to hold off on expediting an extension with the quarterback while police look into what has been described as a "suspicious incident" (allegedly involving Kaepernick, teammate Quinton Patton and Seattle's Ricardo Lockette) in Miami earlier this month. The 26-year-old Kaepernick finished the 2013 season with 3,197 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 91.6 passer rating in 16 games for the 49ers. He also recorded 524 rushing yards (on 92 carries) with four rushing touchdowns.
49ers coach Jim Harbaugh blames Kapernick's early season struggles on a foot injury he suffered in Week 1 against Green Bay and a lack of quality depth at the receiver position, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Kaepernick completed 14-of-24 passes for 153 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions during the 49ers' 23-17 loss to the Seahawks in Sunday's NFC Championship. He also carried the ball 11 times for 130 yards and lost a fumble.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

This was a tough one for Kaepernick, as he looked like he was in control of this game, right up until the fourth quarter when turnovers cost him in the end. In fact, the final three possessions for San Francisco ended on a Kaepernick turnover. He's going to have to learn to make better decisions, as he forced some passes that just shouldn't have been thrown, but people also need to remember that he's only been a starting quarterback for a season and a half and has plenty of room to grow. If he can improve on the passing aspect next season, while maintaining his strength in the ground attack, he could blossom into a fantastic fantasy option.
As the 49ers starting quarterback, Kaepernick is 1-2 against the Seahawks and is averaging just 182 passing yards and 17.7 rushing yards per game. He has thrown for just two touchdowns and has five interceptions.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

All eyes will be on Kaepernick this week in the NFC championship game as he makes his fourth start against the league's top-ranked defense. Many consider this to be another defining moment in his career as he attempts to silence his critics and dispel the myth that he is incapable of leading his team past the Seahawks while on the road. The numbers certainly aren't in his favor, so it will be an uphill climb, to say the least.

2013

After taking over in mid-October, Kaepernick used his rocket arm and mobility to lead San Francisco all the way to the Super Bowl. On the way, the quarterback totaled 8.3 YPA and posted at least two passing touchdowns or a rushing touchdown in five of his seven regular-season starts. Kaepernick's upside was most apparent in the Niners' first playoff game; he threw for 261 yards and two scores while also galloping for a remarkable 181 rushing yards a playoff record for a quarterback and two more touchdowns. That's 52 fantasy points for those counting at home. Although Kaepernick might seem like a risky selection, consider that he ran for at least 50 yards in six games last year (including the playoffs), so he can give you points even when he's struggling through the air. That versatility makes Kaepernick a safe week-to-week play. Of some concern is the loss of top target Michael Crabtree to a torn Achilles' tendon during spring OTAs. Of Kaepernick's 2,406 yards and 14 TD passes from Week 11 (when he took over as the full-time starter) through the Super Bowl, Crabtree accounted for 880 yards and eight scores. The addition of Anquan Boldin should help, but its unlikely Boldin, a gimpy Mario Manningham or untested Quinton Patton and A.J. Jenkins can fill Crabtree's shoes.

2011

While the WAC pistol quarterback figures to be quite raw, Kaepernick is a well-documented hard worker who could earn some starts if Alex Smith slips up. In the event Kaepernick does start, hed be worth a look as a fantasy option due to his 4.51 speed and rare arm strength. Even if hes too raw to make an impact as a passer, he figures to be an instant hit as a runner after piling up 4,109 yards and 59 touchdowns on the ground at Nevada. The 49ers brought Alex Smith back on a one-year deal, which means Kaepernick could be the long-term solution in San Francisco.
