Despite being undersized – 5-7, 199 – and fairly little-utilized by the Niners, Hunter's been a credible backup to Frank Gore for the last three years, averaging 4.6 YPC. Though he only carried 78 tim...

Kendall Hunter: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Hunter was waived/injured by the 49ers on Monday, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

After suffering a torn ACL last week, Hunter can now be claimed by any organization. However, he's only produced modest results in three seasons, averaging 4.6 YPC on 262 career carries. If he lands outside of San Francisco, though, an organization will be investing much in his recovery from a serious injury. In the meantime, rookie Carlos Hyde is the presumptive candidate to wrangle the 49ers' backup running back gig behind Frank Gore.
Hunter has been diagnosed with a torn ACL, CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

MRI results confirmed the 49ers' worst fears, ruling Hunter out for the entire 2014 season. Rookie second-round pick Carlos Hyde and 2013 fourth-round pick Marcus Lattimore (knee/hamstring) will likely be asked to fill the void behind Frank Gore. With the 49ers favoring a run-heavy approach and already expected to utilize multiple running backs, Hyde has an excellent opportunity. There's a much higher degree of uncertainty concerning Lattimore, who has yet to prove that he's fully recovered from the devastating knee injury he suffered back at South Carolina in 2012. LaMichael James and Jewel Hampton round out the depth chart at running back, and while the 49ers seemingly wanted James to focus on the return game, Hunter's injury may change that sentiment.
Hunter has had an MRI on his knee, and the 49ers are worried that the running back's injury may be significant, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

Hunter sustained a leg injury Friday, ESPN's Ed Werder reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

The 49ers haven't revealed the seriousness of the injury, but Werder's source within the team said it didn't look good when he suffered the injury. With questions abut Marcus Lattimore's health already being raised this summer, Carlos Hyde is looking more and more like the backup to own in San Francisco.
Despite the buzz surrounding rookie running backs, Carlos Hyde and Marcus Lattimore, Kendall Hunter still has a shot at being the primary back up to Frank Gore this season, CSN Bay Area reports.

2014

2013

At 5-7, 199, Hunter's been quietly effective as the backup to Frank Gore the last two years, averaging 4.6 YPC. His season ended prematurely last year, though, when a torn Achilles' tendon in Week 12 landed him on IR. He hopes to be ready for training camp but will have to compete with LaMichael James for backup snaps when he does return. If the aging Gore were to go down, Hunter likely would split the backfield duties with James.

2012

Hunter didn’t receive a ton of work as a rookie, but played well when given the opportunity, attacking the hole hard and showing noticeably more speed than starter Frank Gore. However, San Francisco signed Brandon Jacobs in free agency and spent a second round pick on LaMichael James, so it’s a crowded backfield behind Gore this season. Hunter might have the most upside of the entire group, but he’ll need injuries to strike to be anything but a change-of-pace type back.

2011

Hunter isn't a burner, but he's still an elusive and quick runner who's tough to track in traffic and is already being projected to be the 49ers' No. 2 running back in 2011. San Francisco’s backfield belongs to Frank Gore, but he's played 16 games just once during his six-year career and is coming off hip surgery. Hunter could make an immediate fantasy impact if Gore were again to go down. This team is going to run the ball a ton under new coach Jim Harbaugh.
