Out for the year with a neck injury that is thought to be career-ending.
After last year's first-round pick fumbled on his second pro carry, the Giants limited Wilson to kick returns for most of the season. But when Andre Brown went on IR and Ahmad Bradshaw also went down, they got a glimpse of Wilson's explosive ability from the backfield. Despite seeing only 71 carries, Wilson's five rushes of 20-plus yards led Giants running backs even as Brown and Bradshaw averaged an impressive 5.3 and 4.6 YPC, respectively, running behind one of the league’s better run-blocking lines. With Bradshaw no longer on the team and Brown injured again, Wilson has a golden opportunity to lead the team's backfield out of the gate. Armed with dynamic acceleration, deceptive strength and open-field elusiveness, Wilson has the tools to post a big second-year campaign, especially given that Brown is sidelined indefinitely with a fractured leg he suffered in the Giants' preseason finale.
Wilson busted out after a couple of nondescript seasons at Virginia Tech, Wilson busted out as a junior last year, rushing for 1,709 yards with nine touchdowns while getting 5.9 YPC. The former track star is extremely athletic, and he led all of college football in yards after contact last season. He had fumbling issues, and durability is also a concern, but the Giants let Brandon Jacobs leave via free agency, and it’s hard to argue with GM Jerry Reese’s track record when it comes to the draft. Taken in the first round, Wilson is expected to open 2012 behind Ahmad Bradshaw on the depth chart, but he’s a flier with plenty of upside.
