2024 Fantasy Outlook
Armed with the first pick in this year’s draft, the Bears cut bait on would-be franchise QB Justin Fields, trading the 2021 11th overall pick to the Steelers for a mere sixth-rounder. Fields is expected to back up Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh, though the team said he’ll have a chance to compete for the starting job. Winning the role seems unlikely, as Fields’ accuracy has not improved in his three years. Last season, he ranked 28th in the league in on-target percentage (68.1) and 29th in completion percentage (61.4). His downfield passing, though, greatly improved (thank you, DJ Moore). Not only did Fields look downfield often -- his average target depth was 8.0 (11th) as he threw deep on 14.3 percent of attempts, second highest in the league -- he was on target with 51.9 percent of his attempts of 20-plus yards (11th), completing 40.7 percent (12th) for seven TDs and two INTs. Better numbers than Wilson’s, by the way. Fields’ fantasy value, though, is built on his rushing. Despite missing four games with a thumb injury, he ranked second among QBs with 657 rushing yards and had four scores. Prorating his stats to 17 games would rank him sixth among fantasy QBs, the same as where he finished in 2020. Fields has more potential fantasy value than Wilson, but he might not get the chance. Fifth-year option declined
The Steelers informed Fields on Wednesday that they won't exercise his fifth-year option for 2025, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Steelers' decision comes as little surprise, given that Fields is coming into his new organization as the second quarterback on the depth chart and would be guaranteed around $25.66 million in 2025 if Pittsburgh were to pick up his option before the May 2 deadline. While the team may have interest in keeping him around beyond the upcoming season, it won't be at a hefty price before he's ever put on a Steelers uniform. Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports that fellow offseason acquisition Russell Wilson will enter offseason workouts in "pole position" at quarterback, with Fields then getting a chance to compete at some point in the future, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. Fields is on track to be a free agent next spring, and his playing time between now and then seems largely dependent on Wilson struggling or missing time with an injury.

Could return kickoffs in '24?
Steelers running back Jaylen Warren recently relayed that special-teams coach Danny Smith had suggested Fields might be a good candidate to serve as a returner under the new kickoff rule set to take effect for the 2024 season, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Warren revealed the very intriguing news as a guest of teammate Cam Heyward's "Not Just Football" podcast during the Steelers' NFL Draft party. Smith's suggestion is unlikely to be implemented, but the idea likely stemmed from the combination of Fields' 4.45 speed and the new rules that prevent the coverage team from running toward the returner until the kickoff has been fielded. Pryor reports the injury risk that would still be involved in having Fields bring back kickoffs and the fact Pittsburgh also signed Cordarrelle Patterson this offseason would make the scenario of Fields filling that role very unlikely.

Fields finished sixth in fantasy scoring among quarterbacks last season, almost completely thanks to rushing production. He had the second most rushing yards by a QB in league history and added eight rushing touchdowns in 15 games. Fields ran for at least 70 yards three times, including totals of 132, 147 and an all-time QB-record 178 in Week 9. His passing, though, did not improve much from his woeful rookie season. Fields ranked 29th in on-target percentage (68.2) and 31st in completion percentage (60.4). His 3.5 INT rate ranked 32nd of 33 qualified QBs, and despite his big arm, Fields ranked among the least effective QBs for downfield passing by most metrics. But Fields had little help in an offense devoid of playmakers. That’s why the Bears traded this year’s No. 1 overall pick to the Panthers for standout WR DJ Moore (and more draft picks). Moore gives Fields a legitimate No. 1 receiver and allows Darnell Mooney to return to a secondary role after being miscast last year (before a Week 12 season-ending injury). Chase Claypool, a non-factor last year after a midseason trade, could have a bigger role after an offseason to dive into OC Luke Getsy’s playbook. At tight end, Cole Kmet and Robert Tonyan are both capable pass catchers. The offensive line is a potential weak point, but 10th overall pick Darnell Wright should immediately upgrade RT. Fields at least has a better set up entering his third season, so even if his rushing regresses slightly, modest improvements in accuracy and passing volume could push him into the top 5 of fantasy quarterbacks.
