Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Detroit - Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out Thursday’s victory over the Rays. Valverde, who is a perfect 38-for-38 in save opportunities this year, has allowed just two earned runs over his last 16.2 innings.

Houston - Mark Melancon picked up his 14th save of the season in Thursday’s victory over the Giants. Melancon has been a bit hit-or-miss over the last few weeks, but he’ll be the closer the rest of the way and is the favorite to open 2012 with the job.

John Mayberry, OF, PHI - Mayberry has been on a tear over the last several weeks, hitting .312 with nine home runs and 29 RBI in 32 games - including just 21 starts - since July 5. Despite Mayberry’s recent hot streak, he remains available in over 90 percent of leagues on both Yahoo! and ESPN. Mayberry has started eight of the last nine games and should continue seeing increased action down the stretch to keep the Phillies’ regular outfielders fresh. Don’t hesitate to grab him if you are looking for some outfield help, some power, or both over the final few weeks of the season.
