Closer Watch
Marlins -
Steve Cishek replaced a struggling
Heath Bell in the ninth inning of Friday's game and recorded the final two outs en route to his first save of the season. Marlins skipper Ozzie Guillen then brought Cishek in with one out in the eighth inning on Saturday. He recorded the final two outs of the inning and gave way to
Heath Bell in the top of the ninth. Bell proceeded to allow a hit and two walks while recording just one out and was yanked in favor of left-hander
Randy Choate, who was able to shut the door on the Giants. Though Choate was likely brought in with two lefties due up, Guillen's patience with Bell might be running out. Bell did recently convert four saves in five days for the Marlins, but these back-to-back rough outings (combined with his current 8.47 ERA) may soon lead to him losing his job as closer.
Nationals -
Tyler Clippard recorded the final two outs of Saturday's game against Atlanta to earn his third save in four days. Since
Henry Rodriguez was relegated to the set-up role, Clippard has emerged as the clear favorite for save opportunities. Though the Nats are still technically using a closer committee at the moment, look for the right-handed Clippard to get the call in most situations.
Blue Jays -
Casey Janssen was brought in at the start of the ninth inning on Saturday, with the game tied 5-5. He went 1.2 innings, and when Toronto got the lead in the top of the 13th, it was the recently recalled
Ryota Igarashi who came out to start the bottom of the inning. He allowed a walk and a double and was replaced by
Jason Frasor, who gave up a two-run blast to
Josh Hamilton and was charged the blown save. If anything, these performances just further supplant Janssen as the closer while
Sergio Santos (shoulder) is out.
Recommended Pickup
(
Steve Cishek is highly recommended after
Heath Bell struggled again Saturday, but he was our recommended pickup yesterday)
Juan Francisco, 3B, ATL - The 24-year-old has been in the Braves' starting lineup seven of the past eight days, and he has two homers and four RBI over that stretch. He went 3-for-4 in Saturday's contest, and with
Chipper Jones (calf) being placed on the disabled list Friday, Francisco figures to see frequent action at the hot corner until Jones' return. While he's batting just .226 on the year, Francisco might provide you some cheap power (five homers already) over the next few weeks.
Other Recent Recommendations: Steve Cishek,
Justin Morneau,
Alex Cobb,
Tyler Clippard,
Jarrod Saltalamacchia
