Closer Watch
Chicago (NL) - Brace yourself, Cubs fans - he's back. Carlos Marmol has returned to closing duties for the Cubs, and successfully converted his third save of the season and first since May 2 against the Red Sox on Friday afternoon. The save was in typical Marmol fashion, as he worked around a hit, error and (what else?) a walk before preserving the 3-0 victory. Though Marmol's four walks in 5.1 innings in June are a marked improvement, he remains highly erratic, meaning James Russell and Shawn Camp could soon usurp him of his duties if or when Marmol's next meltdown occurs.
Detroit - After video appeared to show Jose Valverde spitting in his glove in Sunday's game, Major League Baseball announced on Thursday that Valverde will face no disciplinary measures from the league, ensuring that he will relinquish none of the Tigers' save opportunities in the upcoming days. He picked up his 13th save of the season on Thursday.

Danny Espinosa, 2B, WAS - After a promising rookie season in which Espinosa finished with 21 home runs and 17 steals, we rated Espinosa as the tenth-best second baseman in mixed leagues for our fantasy baseball magazine. Despite the endorsement, however, Espinosa was likely dropped in many mixed leagues after a slow start to the season left him batting only .205 with no home runs and only one stolen base in April. His average now sits at a more palatable but still uninspiring .235. While that number is not likely to improve much given Espinosa's high strikeout rate, he now has six homers and nine steals on the season, putting him back on track to be the 20-20 player many anticipated he would be. At the very least, Espinosa is worthy of adding in the short term because of his current hot streak, as he has batted .300 with a home run and four steals this month. That batting average will inevitably decline; the home run and stolen base totals likely will not.
