Closer Watch

New York Mets - Three days after notching his 100th career save, LaTroy Hawkins went out and picked up No. 101, his 13th of the year. Wednesday's perfect frame marked Hawkins’ 13th consecutive scoreless appearance, and brought his ERA on the year back below 3.00. Hawkins, who’s now converted 13-of-14 save chances since taking over the closer’s role in early August, recently told ESPNNewYork.com that he wants to pitch again in 2014, at the age of 41. It’s very possible, however, that he’ll leave New York for a more lucrative deal elsewhere, and the Mets seem to see the writing on the wall. Right-hander Vic Black, whom the team acquired from Pittsburgh last month, was given his first save opportunity Tuesday, and responded with a two-strikeout, perfect frame against Cincinnati. Black posted a 12.2 K/9 at Triple-A Indianapolis earlier this year, and it appears the Mets will give him another chance to close before the end of the season, to see if he can be an option for the ninth-inning gig in 2014. Those in dynasty leagues should take note.

Recommended Pickup
Tommy Medica, 1B, SD - Medica burst onto the scene earlier this month, going 6-for-19 (.316 average) with two home runs in his first five games at the major league level. He went cold shortly thereafter, but the 25-year-old is heating up again, with six hits in his last four games, including another homer Wednesday. Furthermore, Medica has started 16 straight games for San Diego since his Sept. 10 callup, and while he’s striking out an alarming rate (31.5 percent), the power seems to be legitimate. In 280 at-bats at Double-A San Antonio prior to his promotion, Medica clubbed 18 dingers and 20 doubles, and in 2012, he put up a .623 slugging percentage at High-A Lake Elsinore (355 at-bats).
