Yahoo DFS Baseball: Wednesday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Wednesday's 12:35 PM Eastern time MLB slate has 16 games on the schedule, including a Marlins-Mets doubleheader. A pair of affordable pitchers who have recently outplayed their respective prices are facing vulnerable opponents here, and deploying one or both of those guys can save owners ample salary to spend on some of this slate's more potent sluggers.

PITCHER

Felix Pena, LAA vs. TEX ($34): Finally stretched out after starting the year in the bullpen, Pena has gone at least six innings in each of his past five starts after reaching that threshold only once in his first nine. That increased length has been accompanied by better effectiveness, as Pena owns a 2.81 ERA over this recent stretch, along with a 33:8 K:BB in 32 innings. Look for him to keep rolling against a Rangers team that averages only 3.97 runs per game on the road -- seventh-fewest in the league.

Wade LeBlanc, SEA vs. SD ($36): LeBlanc's another affordable pitcher that's been rolling recently. The veteran lefty has allowed just one run in 19 innings over his past three starts, giving him tremendous momentum heading into this home date with a Padres offense that ranks third from the bottom at 3.83 runs per game. LeBlanc offers a serviceable 19.5 percent strikeout rate, but his total in that category could be amplified in this matchup since San Diego strikes out second-most in the league (9.45 per game).

CATCHER

Evan Gattis, HOU at DET ($7): Gattis' .348 wOBA in 135 at-bats against lefties this year doesn't jump off the page, but that number climbs to a much more robust .402 in 65 at-bats away from pitcher-friendly Minute Maid Park. At just $7, Gattis' road production makes him a strong choice against mediocre Tigers southpaw Daniel Norris, who has allowed a .331 wOBA to right-handed hitters in his career.

FIRST BASE

Jose Abreu, CWS at KC ($20): Abreu has a .391 wOBA against left-handed pitching this season, putting him slightly ahead of his career .385 pace. He has a great chance to raise that number even higher against Royals lefty Eric Skoglund, as Skoglund has surrendered a .361 wOBA to right-handed hitters en route to a 6.45 ERA in 51.2 innings this year.

SECOND BASE

Ozzie Albies, ATL at SF ($11): The switch-hitting Albies has been far better from the right side, with a .391 wOBA against left-handed pitching. He'll be operating from his preferred side here against Giants lefty Derek Holland, who is allowing a .329 wOBA to batters from the right side this season and has surrendered a .345 mark to them in his career.

THIRD BASE

Miguel Andujar, NYY at MIN ($19): Andujar has actually fared better against right-handed pitching during his fabulous rookie campaign, producing a .366 wOBA that's comfortably ahead of the right-handed slugger's .344 mark against lefties. Batting in the heart of the potent Yankees lineup should create plenty of opportunities for Andujar to accrue value against Twins righty Jake Odorizzi. Odorizzi has been equally mediocre against batters from both sides, allowing a .329 wOBA from the left and a .328 mark from the right.

SHORTSTOP

Javier Baez, CHC vs. MIL ($18): Brewers starter Chase Anderson has struggled in righty-on-righty matchups, surrendering 2.08 HR/9 in that split to go with a .329 wOBA. Baez has a .365 wOBA against right-handed pitching, and 58 of his 75 extra-base hits have come in that split. Throw in Wrigley Field's fifth-ranked 1.15 park factor, and it becomes hard not to like Baez in this matchup.

OUTFIELD

Joc Pederson, LAD at CIN ($8): The 196 batters to face Reds righty Anthony DeSclafani from the left side this season have produced a .365 wOBA. That number should climb even higher by the time the Dodgers' lefty laden lineup is done with him, and Pederson offers the best bang for the buck out of those left-handed hitters. Despite leading off and producing a .365 wOBA against righties (.409 facing them on the road), Pederson can be had for just $8.

Eddie Rosario, MIN vs. NYY ($12): While Rosario's cooled off in the second half, the left-handed slugger still has a .360 wOBA against right-handed pitching for the season. That number coupled with batting either second or third in the Twins' order should be enough to make Rosario an appealing option against struggling Yankees righty Luis Severino. In 11 starts since July 7, Severino has served up 45 runs (42 earned) and 13 home runs over 55.1 innings, good for an ERA of 6.83 and HR/9 of 2.11.

Ramon Laureano, OAK at BAL ($18): Righty-on-righty matchups have been Laureano's bread and butter in his brief career, as he has a .428 wOBA in 56 such at-bats compared to a .324 mark in 33 at-bats against lefties. Luckily for him, Baltimore will be sending vulnerable righty Andrew Casher to the mound here. Batters from the right side have pummeled Cashner to the tune of a .365 wOBA in 2018.
