FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Marcus Stroman, TAM at TOR ($7,900): I thought long and hard about the bargain basement-priced Colin Rea ($5,600) in this spot, but he's drawn a tall order in the form of a Giants squad that's firing up Madison Bumgarner and hits righties very well. Stroman has no such worries regarding the latter in his matchup, as the Rays check in with the highest strikeout rate in the majors (26.4 percent), sixth-lowest wOBA (.300), and lowest team batting average (.215) against right-handed pitching. Stroman also dominated them at Tropicana Field on May 1 to the tune of an eight-inning, three-hit, nine-strikeout performance that netted 60 fantasy points. Furthermore, he boasts a 9-2 career record at the normally pitching-adverse Rogers Centre, while holding opposing teams to a .213 average and giving up only four homers over 99.2 innings.

Catcher

Jarrod Saltalamacchia, DET vs. MIN ($2,500): Salty has come back down to earth a bit from his torrid April, but has scored 21.7 and 12.7 fantasy points in his last two starts. He draws the home-run prone Phil Hughes, a matchup that will see the switch-hitting Tigers' backstop hitting from the left side, where he generates the majority of his power. The veteran catcher has a .410 wOBA and .393 ISO in 70 plate appearances against righties this season, along with six of his seven homers. Hughes has surrendered a .393 wOBA to the 52 lefty bats he's encountered this season, and has given up a homer to Salty in his career as well.

First Base

Freddie Freeman, ATL at PIT($3,300): Freeman has started to pick it up after a slow start, scoring between 18.4 and 27.9 fantasy points in four of his last 10 games. He's belted homers in three of those games as well, and currently owns a .360 wOBA, .210 ISO and 30.5 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitching. Meanwhile, Pirates starter Juan Nicasio has been very giving to left-handed bats, surrendering a .407 wOBA and four homers in 71 hplate appearances against that handedness this season, with two of those dingers coming at his normally offense-stingy home park. The struggles are far from an outlier, as Nicasio sports a .365 wOBA and has given up 33 homers to the 958 lefty bats he's faced over his five-plus major league seasons. To top it off, Freeman owns a .500 average (6-for-12), with a double, triple, four homers, nine RBI and four walks against Nicasio in his career.

Second Base

Jonathan Schoop, BAL vs. SEA ($3,100): One only needs to check Schoop's game log to get a glimpse at the slugging second baseman's upside, as he has fantasy point totals of 27.9, 22.5 and 50.9 in three of his last seven games, along with 13 fantasy points in his most recent contest. He draws a matchup ripe for potential long ball production in the form of Wade Miley, who's given up a .356 wOBA, seven of his eight homers on the season, and a 20.6 percent HR/FB rate to right-handed hitters. Schoop owns a .362 wOBA and 30 percent hard contact rate against southpaws, and has already demonstrated he possesses two-homer upside on any given night.

Third Base

Maikel Franco, PHI vs. MIA ($2,800): Franco has a little bit of everything working for him in his matchup against Wei-Yin Chen, who's always a candidate to surrender a gopher ball or two, and against whom Franco has already had some success in his young career. The Phillies third baseman has a double, homer and two RBI against Chen in six career at-bats, and brings a .344 wOBA and 38.5 percent hard contact rate in his 39 plate appearances against southpaws this season. Chen has surrendered all five of his homers on the season to right-handed bats, and opposing batters have also touched up his fastball to the tune of a .324 average, .363 wOBA and 87.1 percent contact rate over 78 plate appearances this season, a potentially beneficial scenario for a slugger like Franco.

Shortstop

Javier Baez, CHC at MIL ($2,200): Baez comes in at near-minimum price with considerable upside and protection around him in the lineup, making him a sneaky and cost-saving tournament play in particular. Some struggles at the plate have brought his price down to the current level, but he draws a matchup at hitter-friendly Miller Park that could help shake him out of the doldrums. Chase Anderson is having a nightmarish season overall, but has particularly struggled against right-handed bats. He's surrendered a .456 wOBA, six homers and 42.1 percent hard contact rate in 95 plate apparances against righty hitters, but the numbers are even worse at home. He's faced 38 batters from that sample at Miller Park, and given up a .571 wOBA and 46.7 percent hard contact rate to them in the process.

Outfield

Gregory Polanco, PIT vs. ATL ($3,500): Polanco is coming off a 24.6 fantasy point outing against the Braves on Monday, his third game with over 20 fantasy points in the last seven, and fifth with double-digit fantasy points in the last nine. He's proven to be a stellar tournament or cash game play this season, and could be in line for more production against rookie righty Aaron Blair. Polanco sports a .395 wOBA and 35.9 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitching, while Blair has given up a .374 wOBA in 44 career plate appearances against lefty bats. Although almost all of that damage has actually come at Turner Field, Polanco's wOBA against righties notably shoots up to .408 when facing them at PNC Park.

Seth Smith, SEA at BAL ($2,900): Smith represents a nice left-handed value bat against Ubaldo Jimenez, who is usually a good target for fantasy purposes any time he takes the hill. Smith owns a .359 wOBA and all four of his homers on the season against righties, while Jimenez has given up a whopping .439 wOBA and three of his five homers on the season to the 79 lefty bats he's seen. The average velocity on his fastball has also dropped to 90 mph this season, and hitters have teed off on it to the tune of a .408 wOBA and 89.9 percent contact rate over 65 plate appearances this season.

Joc Pederson, LOS at LAA ($2,800): Speaking of low velocity, Jered Weaver is also on the hill Tuesday, making righty-mashing slugger Pederson another left-handed value bat with a nice potential ceiling. He already boasts a .390 wOBA, .253 ISO, 22.7 HR/FB rate and 37.1 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitching over 105 plate appearances this season, while Weaver has given up a .399 wOBA to left-handed hitters. His velocity, never a strong suit, is also at an all-time low, with Weaver averaging only 82.7 mph on his fastball in 2016. With Weaver potentially serving up a softball or two, Pederson could well blast one out of the park.
