FanDuel MLB: Saturday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

PITCHER

Josh Tomlin, CLE vs. KAN ($8,500): While some owners will surely opt to roll with the red-hot Clayton Kershaw facing the worst offense in baseball, those who actually want money to spend on hitters will be looking elsewhere. Enter Tomlin, who has been terrific en route to a 7-1 record thus far and will be facing a Royals offense that ranks among the bottom third in baseball. His debacle against the Rangers last time out was largely due to Cleveland's defensive miscues, and the right-hander still has a Kershaw-esque 47:6 K:BB despite that shortened outing. The dropoff in level between the Dodgers ace and Tomlin in no way justifies a $5,000 difference in price.

CATCHER

Yadier Molina, STL vs. SFG ($2,500): Molina has been drastically better against right-handed pitching despite batting from the right side himself, with a .324 wOBA against them in 2016 compared to just a .268 mark against lefties. Luckily for the Cardinals catcher, he faces a familiar foe against whom he has had success and who also plays into his stronger split in Jeff Samardzija. Molina is 10-for-20 lifetime against the former Cubs starter, and should continue to find success against him moving forward.

FIRST BASE

Matt Adams, STL vs. SFG ($3,100): Those in need of a discount first baseman need look no further than Adams, whose 4-for-7 career mark with two doubles and a 1.429 OPS against the Giants' Jeff Samardzija should come as no surprise given his .398 wOBA against all right-handers in 2016. Both his recent history and the matchup are in Adams' corner, meaning all signs point to the Cardinals first baseman providing excellent bang for the buck just like his teammate Molina.

SECOND BASE

Daniel Murphy, WAS at CIN ($4,400): He doesn't need any help based on his incredible numbers to date, but facing Dan Straily and his .330 career wOBA allowed to lefties only enhances the second baseman's stock. Murphy has a brilliant .467 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season, continuing on the torrid pace he established with the Mets last postseason. While Murphy doesn't come cheap, it's hard to imagine him failing to provide value in this scenario.

THIRD BASE

Yunel Escobar, LAA at PIT ($2,800): Escobar is a strong discount option against Pirates starter Jeff Locke, as he owns an impressive .380 wOBA against lefties this season. The Angels' leadoff man should continue scoring runs in bunches now that he's back from a wrist injury, yet his price tag clearly doesn't reflect the third baseman's capability at the plate, particularly in this favorable split.

SHORTSTOP

Brandon Crawford, SFG at STL ($3,000): Crawford's two-hit performance against the Cardinals on Friday gave him consecutive multi-hit games, and he has a great opportunity to push that streak to three with St. Louis sending another struggling righty to the mound in Michael Wacha. The powerful shortstop owns a strong .348 wOBA against right-handed pitching, and is one of few options at the position able to consistently provide game-breaking power with 27 homers since the 2015 season started. Considering Wacha is 0-6 in his last seven starts, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Giants find success against him with Crawford leading the charge.

OUTFIELD

Jacoby Ellsbury, NYY at BAL ($3,600): Ellsbury has a .340 wOBA against right-handed pitching, and is 2-for-2 in his career against Orioles starter Tyler Wilson. The young righty has been very hittable lately, allowing at least six base knocks in each of his last four starts. With his ability to wreak havoc on the base paths in addition to delivering powerful extra-base hits, Ellsbury has many ways in which he can capitalize on this matchup.

Yoenis Cespedes, NYM at MIA ($3,600): Cespedes has been otherworldly in his first 47 at-bats against lefties this season, posting a ridiculous .512 wOBA. He's available for a reasonable price despite that production, despite facing a sub-par lefty in Miami's Justin Nicolino. Nicolino has allowed 14 runs in 20.2 innings during an 0-3 stretch in his last four starts, and things project to only get harder for the young pitcher against Cespedes.

Jon Jay, SDP vs. COL ($3,100): Jay continues to excel as San Diego's leadoff man, collecting 18 hits over the last nine games. He should be in line for a couple more against Rockies starter Chad Bettis, who has given up a whopping 46 base knocks in his last six starts. With the Padres offense as a whole coming alive to score 31 runs through three June contests, Jay shouldn't have an issue converting those hits into runs.
