FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Sunday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Jon Lester, CHC at ATL ($11,400): I tried, I really tried, to come up with a reason to not use Lester on Sunday, and the best I could come up with is that everyone will be on board, and maybe if he goes through the motions and doesn't work into the latter third of the game, another hurler could provide some value. But the matchups didn't offer much to choose from. Detroit's Michael Fulmer ($8,200) hasn't allowed a run in his last three starts and just one over his last 28.1 innings, while the White Sox's Carlos Rodon ($7,900) has given up only three runs to the Royals in two starts this year, if anyone is looking to gamble. But Lester's matchup against the woeful Braves lineup is tailor-made. He's struck out 26 batters over his last three starts, and owns a 0.53 ERA in two June starts.

Catcher

Ramon Cabrera, CIN vs. OAK ($2,000): I've been burned too often on Sundays this season trying to find the right matchup for a catcher, only to see him take the afternoon to rest. In hopes of bucking that trend, Cabrera looks like a worthwhile roll of the dice. With first pitch set for 1:10 pm ET, and Tucker Barnhart having caught each of the last two days, Cabrera should be behind the dish. He's managed six hits and three RBI in his last six starts, and this game has an over/under total hovering around 10.

First Base

Ryan Zimmerman, WAS vs. PHI ($3,200): The Nats gave both Zimmerman and Jayson Werth, who will appear further down this column, Saturday off, seemingly making them safe bets to return to the lineup Sunday afternoon. Prior to an 0-for-7 skid over his last two starts, Zimmerman had churned out 11 hits over seven games. Sunday shapes up to be a solid day for the Nats' veterans to feast on young Phillies starter Adam Morgan, who has allowed 31 runs in 41.2 innings.

Second Base

Jed Lowrie, OAK at CIN ($2,900): Lowrie seems likely to be in the two-hole Sunday against Reds' pitcher John Lamb, who has allowed 23 runs in 38.0 innings. With the A's opposing Lamb with Kendall Graveman and his 5.49 ERA, this contest has a shot to go over its 9.5 run total. Lowrie's .349 wOBP away from home should have him in the middle of that potential scoring outburst.

Third Base

Jhonny Peralta, STL at PIT ($2,500): Peralta has two hits in three of his first four games since returning from injury, and his price hasn't caught up to that surge. Though Peralta hit only .238 against lefties last season, he managed eight home runs in 164 at-bats and is 5-of-14 in his career against Sunday starter Jonathon Niese.

The Padres' Yangervis Solarte ($3,400) would represent a terrific higher-cost option, should he be in the lineup after leaving Saturday's game in the third inning. He owns a .535 wOBP and 1.300 OPS against left-handed pitching.

Shortstop

Trevor Story, COL vs. SDP ($3,700): Story is just the sixth-priciest player in the game with the highest projected total Sunday, giving him a little bit of bargain appeal. He's got a wOBP of .368 against lefties, having gone long twice in 32 at-bats at home against southpaws. He'll contend with Christian Friedrich, who has allowed five runs in his last 11.2 innings.

Outfield

Jayson Werth, WAS vs. PHI ($3,800): Werth has absolutely destroyed left-handers this season, owning a .482 wOBP and 1.157 OPS over 47 at-bats. Having received Saturday off for rest there shouldn't be any lineup worries here, and a matchup with starter Adam Morgan, who has allowed six home runs and a wOBP of .370 to righties, should help keep Werth hot. He's hit safely in nine of his last 10, and is 7-of-13 with three extra-base hits in his last four games.

Jay Bruce, CIN vs. OAK ($3,500): I wanted Joey Votto ($3,500) to be my preference from the Reds offense, but his .242 ISO compared to Bruce's .301 against right-handers gave the slight nod to the outfielder. Oakland starter Kendall Graveman has surprisingly been tougher against left-handed hitters, allowing a .361 wOBP as opposed to a .402 wOBP to righties, but he's been equally generous and owns a 7.71 ERA on the road.

Chris Young, BOS at MIN ($3,100): Young is one of four Red Sox regulars, and one of six on their roster, who owns a wOBP north of .400 against left-handed pitching, and Young's sits at a robust .523. It's certainly an offense to target for stacking purposes against Twins' lefty Pat Dean, who is allowing right-handed hitters to hit .310 against him. Young has also hit safely in eight of his last 10 games with five extra-base hits.
