DraftKings MLB: Thursday Picks

DraftKings MLB: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Kenta Maeda, LAD at COL ($6,700): The Rockies have won the first two games of the series by scoring 19 runs, which makes Maeda an extreme risk for the finale at Coors Field. Still, the righty has a 25.0 strikeout percentage for the season, and he's been better over his past 12 outings with a 3.18 ERA (3.19 FIP) and 72 punchouts through 68 innings. The cap hit has the risks built in, and is the most talented arm on the board for the night slate Thursday.

Bartolo Colon, NYM at NYY ($6,600): The pitching options are atrocious Thursday, and you're taking a leap of faith with whomever you roster. With that said, Colon has allowed one earned run or fewer in five of his past six road outings, and he grabs a favorable matchup. The Yankees have a .303 wOBA and 86 wRC+ against right-handed arms this season, with .300 and 84 marks, respectively, for the past 30 days. Colon's ceiling is likely a little low, but so is his salary.

CATCHER

Stephen Vogt, OAK at LAA ($2,800): This is an attractive price point for the backstop, as opposing starter Ricky Nolasco has surrendered a .360 wOBA to left-handed hitters since 2014, and Vogt has a .341 wOBA over the past two seasons against righties.

FIRST BASE

Pedro Alvarez, BAL vs. TEX ($4,200): With a .624 slugging percentage since June 1, Alvarez is providing pop when in the lineup, and he boasts a .348 wOBA and 123 wRC+ against righties since 2012. A.J. Griffin has also served up a .368 wOBA to left-handed batters this season.

SECOND BASE

Jose Altuve, HOU vs. TOR ($4,800): The pint-sized powerhouse comes in at a discount because of a tough matchup against J.A. Happ. Altuve has a 1.008 OPS, .427 wOBA and 174 wRC+ against lefties over the past two seasons, and he's been even better this year (1.074, .451, 189). Those numbers check out as matchup proof.

THIRD BASE

Justin Turner, LAD at COL ($5,200): With a .610 slugging percentage through 21 career games at Coors Field, Turner has cashed in on his opportunities. He's also sporting a .386 wOBA and 148 wRC+ against right-handed hurlers over the past two seasons, while opposing starter Tyler Chatwood has served up a .368 wOBA at home this year.

SHORTSTOP

Xander Bogaerts, BOS at SEA ($5,000): Facing lefty Ariel Miranda in his first start in the majors is a nice spot for Bogaerts. The shortstop has a .386 wOBA and 141 wRC+ against southpaws dating back to last season, and he's locked into the heart of the Boston lineup, which boasts the highest wOBA (.345) against lefties in the American League.

OUTFIELD

Josh Reddick, LAD at COL ($5,300): The Coors Field boost next to Reddick's .368 wOBA and 137 wRC+ over the past two seasons makes him a solid target Thursday. Expect him to return to the heart of the order and have a solid outing given Tyler Chatwood's home struggles.

George Springer, HOU vs. TOR ($4,200): Sticking with the theme of Altuve, Springer has a .403 wOBA and 158 wRC+ against southpaws over the past two seasons and comes at a discount Thursday. J.A. Happ shouldn't chip off this much salary from a star hitter, so it presents a nice opportunity for a profit.

Adam Frazier, PIT at ATL ($3,300): There is a chance Frazier isn't in the lineup Thursday, but he's fared well against right-handed arms this year (.361 wOBA), so he's a viable value if starting. Matt Joyce ($3,800) is a sound alternative if Frazier is out of the lineup, as Joyce has a cheap salary and .335 wOBA against righties since 2013.
