Yahoo DFS Baseball: Friday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

PITCHER

Jeff Samardzija, SF vs. ATL ($39): Samardzija hasn't been the ace the Giants were hoping for, but he may be heating up for the stretch run, as he has allowed just five earned runs in his last 18.2 innings (three starts). He will look to stay hot against the Braves, who have the second-lowest wOBA against right-handed pitching. It should also be noted that The Shark will take a 46 percent ground ball rate against Atlanta's ground ball tendencies.

David Phelps, MIA vs. SD ($36): Phelps has mainly been a stack target for the last three seasons, but it's becoming hard to ignore his success with each passing start. He sports a 33 percent strikeout over 20.2 innings as a starter heading into his outing against the Padres, along with a 2.78 xFIP. San Diego rates as the bottom team in the league against righties according to wOBA, and carry the fifth-lowest runs above average score against the cutter, a pitch Phelps throws 21 percent of the time.

CATCHER

Evan Gattis, HOU vs. TB ($16): Opposing starter Drew Smyly has had trouble keeping the ball in the park all season, as evidenced by his 1.6 HR/9 rate. Gattis deserves consideration whenever there is a lefty on the mound, as he has tallied a .286 ISO against his opposite hand over 126 at-bats.

FIRST BASE

Paul Goldschmidt, ARI vs. CIN ($24): Goldschmidt's success against lefties this year is something to behold, as he has notched a .347/.500/.611 slash line over 95 at-bats. Brandon Finnegan has the stuff to put together the occasional solid outing, but has allowed 25 homers to righties across 106.2 innings.

SECOND BASE

Daniel Murphy, WAS vs. COL ($20): Murphy has been a nightmare for pitchers this season regardless of which arm they throw with, but he has been especially dominant against righties, slugging .630 over 316 a-bats. Jeff Hoffman may have a bright future, but he kept a 4.02 ERA at Triple-A Albuquerque before being rocked for seven runs (six earned) in his major league debut last week.

THIRD BASE

Nolan Arenado, COL at WAS ($23): Much has been made of Arenado's home/road splits, but he still has a .217 ISO away from Coors Field. He should have an edge in the matchup against Gio Gonzalez, as he will pit his 49 percent fly ball rate against Gonzalez's ground ball profile.

SHORSTOP

Danny Espinosa, WAS vs. COL ($7): Those who wish to scrape the bottom of the barrel could do worse than Espinosa, who comes in sporting a .150 ISO and 10 percent walk rate against right-handers. Espinosa could benefit from the ground ball tendencies Hoffman displayed in his debut against the Cubs, as he hits the ball in the air at a 42 percent rate.

OUTFIELD

Brandon Guyer, CLE at TEX ($11):Martin Perez has a 2.36 ERA over 80 innings at home this season, but his 4.40 xFIP suggests that he is in line for some regression. Guyer has been something of a lefty specialist in 2016, compiling a 1.047 OPS in 90 at-bats.

Mark Trumbo, BAL at NYY ($14):Luis Cessa threw the ball well in his first start this season, but he still has a 1.8 HR/9 rate over 24.2 innings. Trumbo has been on a home run binge of late, and he now owns a .284 ISO against right-handed pitching.

Robbie Grossman, MIN at TOR ($10): Grossman's struggles against righties in 2016 have made him a nice value play against southpaw Francisco Liriano, as he has a .564 slugging percentage against lefties. Meanwhile, Liriano has allowed a 1.5 HR/9 rate against righties in his 24 starts.

Other options: Jose Bautista, TOR vs. MIN ($13); Dexter Fowler, CHC at LAD ($13); Odubel Herrera, PHI at NYM ($12)
