The weather has rained on baseball's parade to start the season, as it seems like every day a game or two is being postponed. As a Detroit-based writer, I know that firsthand, although I'm not really complaining about not being able to watch this Tigers team. Sunday's slate is afternoon-heavy per usual, so at least there's a better chance for rain to lead to delays rather than postponements. Here are some daily fantasy recommendations.
STARTING PITCHER
Luis Severino, NYY at DET ($52): It's hard to gauge the Tigers on their offensive numbers from last season, given that players like Justin Upton and Ian Kinsler are gone. However, so far this year, they have a .216 batting average and .292 OBP. Severino struck out 10.71 batters per nine innings last season, and though he has a 3.50 ERA through three starts this year, he has a 2.14 FIP.
Blake Snell, TAM vs. PHI ($39): Hey, at least we know this game won't get rained out. Snell's numbers have been considerably better at home, including 5.7 scoreless innings this year. He's also struck out 9.03 batters per nine innings in his career. The Phillies, meanwhile, ranked 27th in runs scored last season.
CATCHER
Yadier Molina, STL at CIN ($16): You can argue that the most-successful Molina brother is a bit overrated, but he does have a .284 batting average in his career. He's also enjoyed a power surge to start the season, as he already has five homers. Homer Bailey is coming off a year where he had a 6.43 ERA in 18 starts, and his career ERA is 4.40.
FIRST BASE
Eric Hosmer, SDP vs. SFG ($16): Hosmer has a .288/.364/.458 slash line with his new team, and though he only has one homer he has seven doubles. On top of that, the 28-year-old has hit righties better than lefties the last couple of seasons. We don't know much about Giants starter Tyler Beede, as he has only started one game in the majors. This will be the 24-year-old's first road start, and if he's not up to the task Hosmer could take advantage.
SECOND BASE
Asdrubal Cabrera, NYM vs. MIL ($17): Cabrera is off to a hot start, as he had a .347/.396/.612 slash line heading into Saturday. He's also hit at least 14 homers in his last seven campaigns. Though the season is young, Milwaukee's Jhoulys Chacin has a 6.59 ERA and 1.90 WHIP through three starts. Additionally, Chacin had a 6.53 ERA on the road last year.
THIRD BASE
Alex Bregman, HOU vs. TEX ($17): Bregman is off to a slow start, but his .244 BABIP is bound to improve. He's a former highly-touted prospect who hit 19 homers in his first full campaign in 2017. You know who isn't a young player on the rise? The 44-year-old Bartolo Colon, who is starting Sunday. Though it's impressive that he's still going, he had a 6.48 ERA last season, and his FIP over the last three years is 4.23.
SHORT STOP
Addison Russell, CHC vs. ATL ($9): Russell has never really rounded into a formidable offensive threat, but he does have a little power with 46 homers in 417 games. Plus, he's cheap, and this is a favorable matchup for the 24-year-old. Julio Teheran is heading into the wrong direction professionally, as he has a 7.07 ERA and 1.79 WHIP this year after posting a 4.49 ERA and 1.37 WHIP last season. He's also averaged 1.22 home runs allowed per nine innings over the last three years.
OUTFIELD
Justin Upton, ANA at KAN ($24): Upton crushed lefties last season, as he slugged .728 and hit 12 homers in 125 at-bats against southpaws in 2017. Meanwhile, the Royals are trotting out a lefty on the mound in Eric Skoglund. Last year in seven games, Skoglund had a 9.50 ERA and 2.33 WHIP. If you thought he had to be better this year, he allowed five runs in 4.7 innings in his one start.
Khris Davis, OAK at SEA ($19): Poor Felix Hernandez is falling apart before our eyes. His ERA in each of the last three seasons (including this one) is 3.82, 4.36, and 6.60. His HR/9 ratios are 1.12, 1.77, and 2.40. Hitting home runs is kind of Davis' thing, as he's hit 42 and 43 the last two years, and he already has four this season. Don't be surprised to see him go long on King Felix.
George Springer, HOU vs. TEX ($14): Even with a slow start, thanks in part to a .211 BABIP, Springer has averaged 6.7 fantasy points per game. He's still the guy with a career slash line of .264/.357/.475.
