Coach Fran McCaffery told Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports that Pemsl is down 20 pounds from last year's playing weight.

Pemsl has already drawn praise from his coach for his offseason improvements, though his progression further clouds the frontcourt rotation for the Hawkeyes. He started 14 games during his freshman campaign, but Tyler Cook immediately took the job back after returning from a finger injury. There's also true freshman Luke Garza, who is one of the highest-touted recruits on the roster, and a more traditional center. If Garza locks down the starting center spot, it will be up to Cook and Pemsl to compete with senior Dominique Uhl for the other frontcourt role. This should shake out a little clearer after the beginning of regular season play, though it seems likely all four options will see steady minutes in the upcoming season.

Coach Fran McCaffery stated during Iowa's media day Monday that "Pemsl is playing the best basketball I've I've seen him play."

Pemsl started a stretch of 14 out of 15 games during his freshman campaign with the Hawkeyes, but returned to a reserve role when Tyler Cook returned from a finger injury. Though Cook is expected to start to begin 2017-18, look for Pemsl to see plenty of time on the floor in a deep frontcourt rotation. He averaged 8.9 points and 5.0 rebounds last season, producing two double-doubles on the year. Freshman center Luka Garza should be in the mix as well.

Pemsl (hernia) was able to fully participate throughout practice in August, Jeremiah Davis of The Gazette reports.

Pemsl was out for the majority of the summer after undergoing hernia surgery in May. He averaged 19.3 minutes during the 2016-17 season and his role won't likely increase since Tyler Cook is currently penciled in as the team's starting center.

Pemsl will miss about eight weeks of basketball activity after undergoing sports hernia surgery on Tuesday.

The team announced Pemsl's absence on Wednesday after his successful Tuesday surgery. Per coach Fran McCaffrey, he's expected to miss this summer's Prime Time League, but he should be able to return for Iowa's overseas trip in August. As a freshman, Pemsl recorded 14 starts in 34 appearances, and averaged 8.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 19.3 minutes per game.

Pemsl recorded 10 points (4-8 FG, 2-2 FT), four rebounds, and one assist in 16 minutes during Wednesday's loss to the Boilermakers.

Pemsl was limited by foul trouble while facing a tough Purdue frontcourt of Caleb Swanigan and Isaac Haas. With Tyler Cook (finger) back in action, Pemsl's starting days could be short-lived from here on out, or at least he could see his playing time decrease. Pemsl is averaging 10.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 18.3 minutes per game.

RotoWire Fantasy Analysis

Pemsl had 21 points (9-11 FG, 3-5 FT), eight rebounds, two blocks and two assists over 22 minutes in Monday's victory over Stetson.

Pemsl has started three straight games for the Hawkeyes, filling in for Tyler Cook, who is expected to miss roughly two more weeks due to a fractured right index finger. Pemsl averaged just 6.3 PPG during the first six games of the regular season as a reserve, but since entering the starting lineup, he's seen 22 or more minutes in three straight contests, posting an impressive 19.0 PPG scoring average. As long as the freshman continues to start games, his center eligibility should give him plenty of value in Big Ten-only formats.
