Western Michigan coach Tim Lester recently indicated that Bass sustained an injury in the summer that will require surgery, Patrick Nothaft of MLive.com reports.

Bass joined the program as part of its 2019 signing class after spending the previous two seasons in the JUCO ranks. He was expected to compete for the third running-back job in fall camp, but the injury has taken him out of the mix. It's unclear when Bass will undergo surgery, but any procedure would put his availability in question for 2019. With true freshman Christian Singleton also limited by a unspecified injury in camp, Sean Tyler, Dawson Schick and Trae Allen are now the top candidates for depth-chart slotting behind the Broncos' clear top two backs, seniors LeVante Bellamy and Davon Tucker.
