Ulka Sasaki

Gets finished by rear-naked choke
FlyweightOther
November 17, 2018
Sasaki lost to Alexandre Pantoja via submission (rear-naked choke) at 2:18 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night 140 on Saturday in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
ANALYSIS
Sasaki is an accomplished submission grappler but his choke defense appears to need some work, as this marks the second time he has been tapped by an RNC in his last three fights. Sasaki's height and length makes him something of a puzzle for opponents at flyweight but with the division likely to be dissolved by the end of the year, one has to wonder how he will fare without such pronounced advantages. He falls to 21-6-2 in his MMA career as a result of the loss.

Schools Jenel Lausa on the floor
FlyweightOther
June 23, 2018
Sasaki defeated Jenel Lausa via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:04 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Singapore.
ANALYSIS
Sasaki had a one-track mind in this fight. He immediately went for a takedown and stuck to that strategy for the entire fight. In the second round, he had a lot of trouble closing the distance and scoring the takedown. After several attempts, he scored a single leg and worked Lausa to the ground. From there, Sasaki eventually moved to the mount, took the back and finished with rear-naked choke. This was an impressive and much needed win for Sasaki.
Opponent withdraws from UFC Atlantic City
FlyweightOther
April 20, 2018
Sasaki's opponent for UFC Atlantic City, Magomed Bibulatov, has been scratched from the card with a back injury, Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It was expected to be a tough matchup for Sasaki to begin with, so he might have actually caught a break with the last-minute withdrawal. However, it's still unclear if Sasaki will be given another opponent in advance of Saturday's event.
Tough matchup in Atlantic City
FlyweightOther
February 7, 2018
Sasaki will take on Magomed Bibulatov in a flyweight matchup at UFC Atlantic City on April 21, Alexander K. Lee of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Sasaki is 3-4 under the UFC banner, but a matchup against a top prospect in Bibulatov is hardly what he needs to get back in the win column. Though Bibulatov was upset by John Moraga his last time out, he remains one of the most dangers up-and-coming fighters in the division. On the bright side, this fight represents a chance for Sasaki to preserve his job with the promotion a bit longer, and an upset victory here could even earn him a ranked opponent in the relatively shallow flyweight division.
Gets submitted in Round 1 in Japan
FlyweightOther
September 22, 2017
Sasaki was defeated by Jussier Formiga via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:30 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Friday in Japan.
ANALYSIS
Sasaki is a very long fighter and known for his grappling. However, he was taken down by Formiga early in the fight, and showed very little defense off his back. He gave up mount, then gave up his back, and even though he fought off the choke well for a short period of time, was ultimately submitted. Sasaki is unranked at flyweight and was facing the No. 5 fighter in the division, so this was not an easy fight. It was discouraging to see his lack of defense off of his back, and he will need to improve that aspect of his game if he hopes to compete in the upper echelon of the division.
Digs deep to submit, shocks Justin Scoggins
FlyweightOther
June 17, 2017
Sasaki defeated Justin Scoggins via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:19 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Kallang, Singapore.
ANALYSIS
The end result is all that matters. Sasaki was being beaten from pillar to post before he miraculously connected with the choke that ended the fight. Sasaki is tall (5-foot-10) and a terrific ground specialist, but the rest of his game is suspect. All three of his UFC victories have come via RNC. He has a chance if he can get his opposition on the mat, but good opponents aren't going to allow Sasaki to dictate where the fight takes place.
