Yahoo DFS Baseball: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Make sure to tune in early Sunday, as all 30 teams will be in action starting at 1:10 p.m. EDT. While the first week of the season has helped establish some early trends, there are still plenty of undervalued players to be found for those who know where to look.

PITCHER

Tyler Anderson, COL vs. LAD ($34): Anderson proved very capable of handling the Coors Field conditions as a rookie last season, posting a 3.00 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 78 innings there. His first home start of 2017 comes in a favorable matchup against a Dodgers team that scored just 4.40 runs per game in 2016 and features three lefties in the heart of the lineup in Corey Seager, Adrian Gonzalez and Joc Pederson. Despite all that, Anderson is the ninth-cheapest pitcher at just $34.

Clayton Richard, SD vs. SF ($30): Richard's first start was one of the best pitching performances this season, as he held the Dodgers to seven baserunners in eight scoreless innings. While a repeat effort is unlikely, he does get to pitch in favorable conditions against a Giants team that scored 4.38 runs per game visiting a venue that had a home run park factor of .957 in 2016. Even a slight drop-off would be more than enough to provide strong value at $30.

CATCHER

Yan Gomes, CLE at ARI ($7): In a lineup filled with guys that prefer facing righties, Gomes stands out as a player equipped to deliver against southpaw Patrick Corbin. The affordable catcher has a .335 career wOBA against left-handers, and gets to play out this plus matchup in Chase Field, which ranked second in the league with a park factor of 1.23 last season. Corbin surrendered a .367 wOBA to right-handed hitters in his first start after allowing a .363 mark in that split last season, so using as many Cleveland righties as possible should lead to success.

FIRST BASE

Chris Carter, NYY at BAL ($12): Carter hit cleanup in his Yankees debut Saturday, and he should find himself right back in that spot with Greg Bird (foot/ankle) ruled out. The all-or-nothing slugger smacked 12 homers en route to a .368 wOBA in 134 at-bats against lefties last season, giving him tremendous upside in this matchup with Wade Miley coming off an illness. Miley gave up 22 homers and a .360 wOBA in 129.2 innings against righties last season, and he is unlikely to improve after seeing his ERA rise in each of the past four seasons.

SECOND BASE

Dee Gordon, MIA at NYM ($14): Mets starter Noah Syndergaard allowed a league-high 48 stolen bases last season, which means Gordon is almost certain to swipe a bag if he can just get on base. Doing so shouldn't be too hard for the speedy leadoff man considering he has a career .327 OBP against right-handers and will be facing a pitcher battling a blister. While gambling for steals is often a risky proposition, you won't find a much surer bet than this given Syndergaard's inability to hold runners and Gordon's rate of 0.41 steals per game over the last three years.

THIRD BASE

Yunel Escobar, LAA vs. SEA ($8): Escobar's .393 wOBA against righties in the early going has him on pace to top the .350 mark in what conventional wisdom says should be his worse split for the second time in three seasons. His spot atop the order for a dangerous Angels lineup makes Escobar all the more valuable in this matchup against a pitcher whose .333 wOBA allowed to right-handed hitters last season was actually higher than his .328 mark allowed to lefties (Hisashi Iwakuma). The veteran's affordability makes him an excellent low-cost option to help spend big at other positions without throwing away a lineup spot.

SHORTSTOP

Eduardo Escobar, MIN at CWS ($11): The switch-hitting Escobar has been much more proficient against lefties, posting a .327 career wOBA in that split while managing just .286 against right-handers. He has displayed decent power for a cheap shortstop, with 19 long balls since the start of the 2015 campaign, and he faces a pitcher in Jose Quintana, who gave up three homers to right-handers in his debut after allowing 19 to batters from that side in 2016. Escobar's potential to hit one out is unmatched at his position in this price range.

OUTFIELD

Ender Inciarte, ATL at PIT ($9): Many will overlook Inciarte because he plays for the Braves, but this is the perfect time to deploy the affordable leadoff hitter. Pirates starter Gerrit Cole surrendered a .500 wOBA to left-handed batters in his 2017 debut, which isn't surprising given the .371 mark he allowed in that split last season. Inciarte's .328 career wOBA against righties suggests he has enough ability to take advantage of Cole's struggles while also bringing the possibility of contributing value on the base paths.

Cody Asche, CWS vs. MIN ($8): Asche is another low-cost option primed to take advantage of a platoon split. The 26-year-old posted a respectable .332 wOBA against right-handers like Ervin Santana last season, and Santana's .333 career wOBA allowed to left-handed hitters shows that he's always struggled to get batters out from that side. At just $1 above the minimum, Asche is a low-risk play likely in store for a solid day.

Josh Reddick, HOU vs. KC ($10): Reddick's slow start with his new club has dropped his price to $10, but that number could quickly climb by the time he's done with Nathan Karns. The Royals right-hander comes in with a 54.00 ERA, while Reddick is coming off three consecutive campaigns with a .356 or better wOBA in this split.
