FanDuel MLB: Saturday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Saturday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Kevin Gausman, BAL vs. CWS ($6,500): Gausman's upside remains limited by his proclivity for walks, having allowed two in five innings in his first start since returning from injury while averaging 2.65 walks per nine innings throughout his professional career. But Gausman also has averaged 7.99 strikeouts per nine innings since being drafted, and faces a White Sox lineup that is striking out at an 18.9 percent clip. Gausman looks like a high upside tournament pick at a bargain price that hasn't caught up to his return to action.

Among the top options, Detroit's Jordan Zimmermann ($9,400) is my preferred choice.

Catcher

Jarrod Saltalamacchia, DET at MIN ($2,800): Saltalamacchia took Friday off to clear his head, and is mired in a 1-for-13 slump in his last four games. Even still, he owns a solid .413 wOBP while the Twins are patching together their rotation for Saturday and seem likely to start Tyler Duffey, who has dealt with a shoulder issue and only thrown four innings thus far, making it the biggest mismatch of starters on the docket.

First Base

Albert Pujols, LAA vs. TEX ($3,200): Pujols has only five hits in his last 37 at-bats entering Saturday, but all five of those hits came in his last four games. He owns three doubles and three home runs against Saturday's projected starter, Derek Holland, in 25 at-bats, and is hitting.320 with six long balls in 90 at-bats over the past three seasons at Globe Life Park.

Second Base

Chris Owings, ARI vs. COL ($2,200): Owings price hasn't caught up to his newfound opportunity, as he's taken over as the Diamondbacks' center fielder with A.J. Pollock sidelined. Entering Friday, he'd hit safely in eight of 10 games, going 12-of-35 (.343) while adding three walks and four steals. He's also facing Chris Rusin, who's making his first start after four relief appearances and owned a 5.33 ERA a season ago.

Third Base

Derek Dietrich, MIA at MIL ($2,100): This isn't a position where it's customary to go dirt cheap, and a week from now, Dietrich is likely to be an ideal bargain at second base thanks to Dee Gordon's suspension for PEDs. Until then, he has limited at best upside, but an incredibly stable floor at this cost. Dietrich was 4-for-11 over four games entering Friday, and the Marlins figure to have their way against Saturday starter Chase Anderson, who has allowed 10 runs in his last nine innings.

Shortstop

Javier Baez, CHC vs. ATL ($2,400): Since last week when I was high on Baez, he's averaged 6.72 fantasy points in five appearances, and 11.2 in his last three. The problem is he still isn't an everyday player despite the current injury to Kris Bryant, who is out through the weekend with an ankle injury. Baez still has plenty of untapped power potential while facing starter Julio Teheran, who is allowing 1.53 homers per nine innings.

Outfield

Yasmany Tomas, ARI vs. COL ($3,500): Tomas snapped a two-game hitless streak Friday, but had previously hit in 12 straight prior to that mini-slump. He's gone deep five times in that stretch after hitting just nine home runs last year heading into a matchup against the previously mentioned Chris Rusin and his 5.05 career ERA.

Jackie Bradley, BOS vs. NYY ($2,700): Am I missing something with Bradley? He brings a six-game hitting streak into Saturday and is facing a pitcher in Michael Pineda who he's doubled off of twice in six at-bats. He's averaged 10.3 fantasy points in his last 10 games and 13.1 over his current hitting streak.

Ichiro Suzuki, MIA at MIL ($2,000): There's essentially no risk at this price, and Ichiro assumed the leadoff role Friday following Dee Gordon's suspension. He was 2-for-4 in that role prior to Friday, but the caveat here is he played in place of Giancarlo Stanton on Friday. The Marlins' lineup remains uncertain with Gordon out, but if Suzuki is atop the order Saturday, this time playing alongside Stanton, you're going to have an awfully high ceiling for a bottom-priced player.
