DraftKings MLB: Sunday Picks

DraftKings MLB: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Brandon Finnegan, CIN at HOU ($9,300): Finnegan has seen a considerable price increase due to some recent success, but he still presents as a potentially good value Sunday. He's scored 22.2 and 20.7 fantasy points over his last two starts, respectively, and draws a matchup against an Astros squad that strikes out at a 24.9 percent clip against southpaws, second only to the Mets. Their .233 team batting average against lefties is also the fifth-lowest in the majors, furthering Finnegan's chances for a solid return.

Carlos Carrasco, CLE vs. CWS ($8,700): Carrasco faces a White Sox squad that has been stuck in a prolonged slump overall and that's tallied the seventh-highest strikeout rate in the majors over the last seven days (23.5 percent). They also own the seventh-lowest wOBA (.301) in baseball versus right-handed pitching, and Carrasco certainly brings plenty of strikeout potential each time he takes the mound.

CATCHER

Derek Norris, SDP vs. WAS ($3,400): Norris has certainly enjoyed his brief encounters with Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez in the past, going 3-for-4 with two homers and six RBI against the southpaw. The veteran's bat has also started heating up over recent games, with Norris scoring double-digit fantasy points in four of the last 11 games, and nine fantasy points in another. He's also hit three of his eight homers on the season over that span. Meanwhile, Gonzalez has given up all eight homers this season to right-handed hitters, and has a 5.12 ERA in the 19.1 innings he's pitched this month.

FIRST BASE

Victor Martinez, DET at KC ($4,700) Martinez gives you some left-handed exposure to Chris Young, who's surrendered a .516 wOBA and 13 homers to lefty bats over just 19.1 innings this season. The switch-hitting Martinez has been equally proficient from both sides of the plate this season, generating a .391 wOBA against righties that climbs to .438 when facing them on the road. The veteran's upside is unquestioned, with the 42 fantasy points he totaled in the opening game of the series against the Royals on Thursday serving as the most recent example. The icing on the cake could well be Martinez's 44.4 percent hard contact rate versus right-handed pitching, yet another indicator that he could provide a handsome return.

SECOND BASE

DJ LeMahieu, COL at MIA ($4,000): LeMahieu has five double-digit fantasy point games in the last 11 and owns a .363 wOBA versus right-handed pitching. He's also enjoyed his encounters with Tom Koehler in the past, slashing .545/.583/.727 over 11 at-bats. While Koehler has pitched very well recently, LeMahieu's hot bat makes him worthy of a shot against a pitcher he's enjoyed success against.

THIRD BASE

Danny Valencia, OAK vs. LAA ($4,600): Valencia will have an opportunity to take aim at Jered Weaver's slow-as-molasses fastball, which he's blasted out of the yard on two occasions already in the past. The A's third baseman is having a banner season, with considerable success against pitchers of both handedness. He's mashed righties to the tune of a .342 wOBA and 35.1 percent hard contact rate this season and has generated a .395 wOBA overall this month. Weaver has allowed a .376 wOBA to right-handed hitters this season, and the figure climbs to .429 when facing that handedness on the road. He's also been trending negatively in recent starts, with a 6.75 ERA and .411 wOBA given up in 17.1 June innings.

SHORTSTOP

Francisco Lindor, CLE vs. CWS ($4,300): Lindor has mashed lefties this season to the tune of a .375 wOBA , and he has an outstanding .342 average at home this season. He also has a .381 wOBA this month, while Carlos Rodon has given up a .363 wOBA and nine of his 10 homers on the season to right-handed bats. Six of those round-trippers have come on the road, where he's yielded a nearly identical .362 wOBA to righty hitters. Lindor has also been swinging a hot bat, with three multi-hit efforts over the last six contests.

OUTFIELD

Shin-Soo Choo, TEX at STL ($3,300): Choo is too talented a hitter to remain in the funk he's been in for much longer, and in fact, he's tallied multi-hit efforts in two of the last three games. He sees a pitcher that could facilitate an extension of that success in Mike Leake, who Choo has touched up for a .500/.556/1.375 line over eight at-bats, including a double, two homers and two RBI. While Leake has been tough against lefties this season, he has surrendered eight of his 12 homers to that handedness and generated a 5.40 ERA and a .330 wOBA over 13.1 innings in June.

Mike Trout, LAA at OAK ($4,800): Trout offers some exposure to Eric Surkamp, who's given up a .434 wOBA and 6.71 xFIP to right-handed hitters this season, and he's been even worse against them at home. Surkamp's wOBA versus righties rises to .471 when facing them at the Coliseum, along with a 7.83 xFIP. Trout's resume is certainly well-known, and he's generated a .333 wOBA and 32.6 percent hard contact rate versus southpaws this season. His hard contact rate has also been on the rise in recent weeks, with that figure climbing to 42.9 percent over 51 June at-bats.

Jimmy Paredes, PHI vs. ARI ($2,900): Paredes provides some nice upside at a value price and faces off against Archie Bradley, who's yielded a .390 wOBA and 37 percent hard contact rate to lefty bats this season. He's giving up an even higher 42.5 percent hard contact rate in June, while Paredes has hit 16 of his 17 career homers against right-handed pitching.
