FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Tuesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Clay Buchholz, BOS vs. CWS ($6,000): Buchholz makes a return to the starting rotation after three straight scoreless appearances in relief, a stint that may have helped him get re-focused. He'll take aim at a White Sox squad that owns a mediocre .299 wOBA against righties, sixth-lowest in the majors, and that's also struck out 20.9 percent of the time against that handedness. Their 28.1 percent hard contact rate against righties is also the fourth-worst in the majors, and their .139 ISO places them in the bottom 10 as well. Buchholz was also effective against this same squad back on May 4, surrendering only three hits and two earned runs over seven innings while recording nine whiffs. His track record against Chicago over the previous three seasons gives more reason for optimism, as he's generated a 3.15 ERA versus the White Sox over 20 innings, while holding them to a .219 team batting average.

Catcher

Victor Martinez, DET vs. SEA ($2,900): Finding Martinez at this price is a mild surprise to say the least, especially considering he produced an astounding 56.7 fantasy points just five games ago. Mariners starter James Paxton is certainly no one to shy away from either, and he's given up a .334 wOBA and all three homers this season to right-handed hitters. Martinez has battered southpaws this season to the tune of a .421 wOBA, .230 ISO and solid 32.1 percent hard contact rate.

First Base

James Loney, NYM vs. KAN ($2,400): There's usually some cheap upside to be had at first base, and Loney represents a nice under-the-radar option against the home run-prone Ian Kennedy. After a strong start to the season Kennedy has started to trend downward, giving up a .417 wOBA and eight homers over the 18.1 innings that encompass his last three starts while generating a bloated 7.85 ERA. Loney has also touched up the Royals starter to the tune of a .438/.471/.875 line over 16 career at-bats with four doubles, a homer and three RBI. Kennedy has also surrendered a .334 wOBA to lefty hitters that rises to .360 when facing them on the road, and Loney has generated a 34.8 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitching in his brief tenure with the Mets this season.

Second Base

Devon Travis, TOR vs. ARI ($3,400): Travis' bat is blazing hot at the moment, making it an opportune time to jump on him while the price remains reasonable. He's got a seven-game hitting streak and is slashing an outstanding .556/.579/1.111 with four doubles, two homers and seven RBI over that span, with four consecutive double-digit fantasy point outings. While he has uncharacteristically struggled against southpaws this season over his first 24 plate appearances against them, Travis battered them to the tune of a .415 wOBA over 62 plate appearances during his rookie campaign, so he's likely to begin breaking out of that slump soon. Meanwhile, D-backs starter Patrick Corbin has been more than generous to right-handed hitters, surrendering a .348 wOBA and 39.2 percent hard contact rate to them.

Third Base

Wilmer Flores, NYM vs. KAN ($2,000): Flores is one of two inexplicably minimum-priced players on today's slate that provides you some decent upside at virtually zero risk. While he's certainly capable of producing a goose egg, he's also generated four double-digit fantasy point outings over the last 10, and has two of his three homers on the season over that span as well. Royals starter Ian Kennedy has been more vulnerable to lefty hitters overall but has given up eight homers to right-handed hitters this season, while Flores has launched all three of round-trippers against right-handed pitching.

Shortstop

Trevor Story, COL at NYY ($2,800): Much like Martinez, Story certainly seems to be at a discount considering his considerable upside and matchup against the faltering Ivan Nova. The Yankees starter has a 6.75 ERA over 17.1 June innings, and has given up a .395 wOBA and four homers over that span. He's also yielded a .368 wOBA and six homers on the season to right-handed hitters and although he's been considerably better overall at Yankee Stadium, he has still yielded a .343 wOBA and three homers to righty hitters there. Story owns a .367 wOBA, .304 ISO and 13 of his 18 homers on the season against right-handed pitching, with eight of those actually coming away from Coors Field.

Outfield

Alberto Almora, Jr., CHC vs. STL ($2,000): Our second minimum-priced head-scratcher is Almora, who's essentially guaranteed a nice dose of playing time with Dexter Fowler (hamstring) on the DL. Almora has generated a .333 average in the early going of his major league career, and certainly brings some solid upside while offering you plenty of salary flexibility elsewhere. Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright has rediscovered his 20-win form in June, but has still given up a .338 wOBA to righty bats that rises to .394 when facing them on the road. Almora's success so far has largely come against right-handed pitching as well, as he's tallying a .403 wOBA against that handedness over a modest 18 plate appearances.

Jayson Werth, WAS at LOS ($3,300): Werth's bat has come alive over the last 10 games in particular, during which he's generated four multi-hit efforts and five games with double-digit fantasy points. He's also slashing .322/.414/.475 in June and brings a brief but successful history against Dodgers southpaw Scott Kazmir into Tuesday's matchup. The veteran slugger has gone 3-for-4 with a solo homer and walk against the Dodgers starter, and has decimated left-handed pitching this season to the tune of a .452 wOBA, .286 ISO and massive 51.9 percent hard contact rate. Kazmir has also given up a .322 wOBA and nine of his 12 homers on the season to right-handed hitters, and owns a 5.79 ERA over 14 June innings.

Giancarlo Stanton, MIA vs. ATL ($3,100): Stanton has finally started to show signs of hitting consistently, with a modest four-game hitting streak that includes three multi-hit outings. He also broke out of a prolonged home run slump Monday versus the Rockies, and draws a nice matchup with which to continue that success Tuesday. Braves starter Bud Norris has given up a .368 wOBA and a pair of homers over 15.1 road innings versus right-handed bats, and has generated a .369 wOBA and 5.60 ERA over 27.1 road frames overall. While he's been solid in his last three starts two of those have come at home, with the only away appearance coming in spacious Dodger Stadium. Stanton's bat still packs a punch, and he's blasted s nine of his 13 homers on the season versus righties.
