DraftKings MLB: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

PITCHER

Cole Hamels, TEX vs. KC ($9,900): Despite having a decent offense against left-handed arms on the season (.325 wOBA and 101 wRC+), the Royals own an underwhelming .285 wOBA and 73 wRC+ in July. Hamels hasn't allowed an earned run through his past two outings and sits with a solid 2.87 ERA and 22.5 percent K-rate for the season.

Michael Wacha, STL at MIA ($6,500): Obviously going against Jose Fernandez is a daunting mound matchup, but Wacha has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his past eight outings with a 3.31 ERA and 43 punchouts through 49 innings. The draw here is the cheap price and contrarian angle, though. Fernandez projects to be a popular play, which should leave Wacha scarcely owned.

CATCHER

Sandy Leon, BOS at LAA ($2,900): With five multi-hit games over his past 11 starts, the bubble hasn't burst for Leon yet. The salary is low and facing Jered Weaver is far from daunting, as the veteran righty has allowed a .399 wOBA to left-handed batters at home. Though his offensive surge has short legs, Leon owns a .373 wOBA and 130 wRC+ against righties over 56 plate appearances this year.

FIRST BASE

Chris Davis, BAL at MIN ($4,100): Through 10 games since his last bomb Davis is 3-for-33 at the dish, which helps explain why his salary is down. Kyle Gibson doesn't stand as a matchup to avoid with a .330 wOBA allowed to lefty bats this season, especially with Davis' .385 wOBA and 143 wRC+ dating back to 2015.

SECOND BASE

Jurickson Profar, TEX vs. KC ($3,900): With a three-hit showing Wednesday, look for Profar to stay hot as he eyes a full-time role going forward. He's posted a .398 wOBA and 146 wRC+ at home against righties this season and Yordano Ventura isn't a worrisome matchup given his .323 wOBA allowed to left-handed hitters over the past two seasons.

THIRD BASE

Manny Machado, BAL at MIN ($4,400): In the midst of heating up, Machado is 9-for-26 with two home runs over his past seven games which makes his relatively low price attractive. Dating back to last season, he also has a .384 wOBA and 142 wRC+ with 46 home runs.

SHORTSTOP

Brandon Crawford, SF vs. WAS ($3,500): Opposing hurler Tanner Roark surrendered five earned runs in his last outing and is already well past the 111 innings he spun last season. Crawford owns solid upside with a .334 wOBA and 117 wRC+ against righties dating back to last year, especially relative to his cap hit. Hitting in the heart of the lineup helps the shortstop, too.

OUTFIELD

Odubel Herrera, PHI at ATL ($4,900): Even with a great matchup, Herrera could be little owned because of his cap hit. Still, Matt Wisler has allowed a .508 slugging percentage and .379 wOBA to left-handed hitters since entering the league and Herrera owns a solid .351 wOBA and 120 wRC+ against righties since last year.

Mark Trumbo, BAL at MIN ($4,700): Another bat in the heart of the Baltimore lineup, Trumbo has owned righties to the tune of a .391 wOBA and 145 wRC+ this season. Gibson isn't an imposing enough arm to give you pause when stacking Orange Birds, especially at their accommodating salaries.

Nomar Mazara, TEX vs. KC ($4,000): The rookie has been up and down the lineup of late but appears past a recent slump with an 11-for-34 run and .471 slugging percentage through his past nine games. For the campaign, he owns a .349 wOBA and a 113 wRC+ against righties and, as noted, Ventura has been generous to lefty hitters over the past two seasons.
