PITCHER
Gio Gonzalez, WAS vs. PHI ($8,000): The Phillies grade out as a near perfect matchup for Gonzalez based on 2016 statistics, as they had the second-lowest wOBA against lefties, tallied just a .305 wOBA on the road, and registered as the third-worst team in the league against the curveball according to runs above average. Gonzalez has gotten off to a fast start in 2017, allowing one run over 13 innings (two starts), and striking out 13 batters over that span.
Drew Pomeranz, BOS vs. TB ($7,500): Pomeranz began the season on the disabled list while recovering from a forearm issue, but he threw the ball well in his season debut against the Orioles, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out six. The Rays were a bottom-10 team against the curveball in 2016, according to runs above average, and struck out more than a quarter of the time against left-handed pitching.
CATCHER
Salvador Perez, KC vs. LAA ($3,200): Perez has found his power stroke to begin the year, having hit five homers over 11 games. The 26-year-old has an excellent chance to stay hot against Tyler Skaggs, who has allowed 10 runs and a .618 slugging percentage in just 8.2 innings against righty batters.
FIRST BASE
Freddie Freeman, ATL vs. SD ($4,400):Trevor Cahill walked over 12 percent of the left-handed batters he faced in 2016, which contributed to a 4.74 xFIP over 26.1 innings. Freeman tallied a walk rate of nearly 15 percent against righties to go along with a .293 ISO, meaning he should be able to make Cahill pay if he falls behind in the count.
SECOND BASE
Yangervis Solarte, SD at ATL ($3,400): At a certain point, it becomes time to wonder if predominantly throwing fastballs at a speed of 89 miles per hour is still a viable strategy. Bartolo Colon seems to be discovering the answer to that question, as he has been tagged for seven runs (including two home runs) over 10 innings in his first two starts. Solarte is a hitter who typically holds a low strikeout rate (11 percent career), which should allow him to put the .181 ISO he tallied against righties last season to good use.
THIRD BASE
Kris Bryant, CHC vs. PIT ($4,600):Jameson Taillon has kept a career ground-ball rate of 53 percent, while tallying a hard-contact rate of 34 percent over that span. That is a bad combination against a hitter like Bryant, who holds a career fly-ball rate of 46 percent and a hard-contact rate of 39 percent against righties.
SHORTSTOP
Francisco Lindor, CLE vs. DET ($4,400): Matthew Boyd had trouble keeping the ball in the park against righties in 2016, when he allowed 15 homers in 79.1 innings. Lindor has come out of the gate hot this season, notching a monstrous .721 slugging percentage over his first 11 games.
OUTFIELD
Ryan Braun, MIL at CIN ($4,900):Sal Romano used his big fastball to get strikeouts while pitching for Double-A Pensacola last season, but he has struggled to get whiffs in the past, as he logged just 79 punchouts in 104 innings at High-A Daytona in 2015. Romano performed well this spring, but he could struggle in a hitters' park if he is unable to put big bats like Braun away.
Jay Bruce, NYM at MIA ($3,400):Dan Straily closed last season having logged a 5.39 xFIP against lefties, due in large part to a 13 percent walk rate. The worm may be turning for the 28-year-old in 2017, as he has allowed a .625 slugging percentage against lefties over 18 at-bats.
Bryce Harper, WAS vs. PHI ($5,000):Jerad Eickhoff allowed a .498 slugging percentage against lefties last season, while getting strikeouts at just a 17 percent clip. Harper could make things even tougher for the 26-year-old, as he finished 2016 with a 6.0 RAA against the curveball, a pitch Eickhoff threw 24 percent of the time.
