DraftKings MLB: Monday Picks

This article is part of our DraftKings MLB series.

Pitcher

Zack Godley, ARI vs. NYM ($6,300) - Godley has made a significant adjustment after a disastrous 2016, scaling back his cutter and relying heavily on his curveball. The move appears to be paying dividends, as the curve has registered a 4.1 RAA over just two starts. The 27-year-old has upped his swinging strike rate to 14.3 percent over that span. The Mets may not be the weakest antelope in the jungle, but on a slate comprised mostly of back-end starters, Godley seems to offer the most upside.

Jesse Chavez, LAA vs. CWS ($7,800) - We will rely primarily on the ineptitude of the White Sox offense for this pick, as they hold the second lowest wOBA against righties, and the fourth lowest wOBA away from home. Chavez isn't entirely unappealing, as he has registered 5.2 RAA with his changeup over eight games (seven starts).

Catcher

Yasmani Grandal, LAD at SF ($3,500) - Matt Cain has walked more left-handed batters than he has struck out this season, while allowing a .384 wOBA over 14.1 innings. Grandal has swung the bat well against righties, notching a .208 ISO and a 40 percent hard contact rate in 77 at-bats.

First Base

Freddie Freeman, ATL at TOR ($4,900) - Mike Bolsinger threw the ball well at Triple-A Buffalo this season but was mediocre in his first start with the Blue Jays, allowing two runs while walking four Indians over 5.2 innings. Bolsinger has long relied on his curveball to get outs, which is good news for Freeman, who has notched an RAA of 5.8 against the pitch.

Second Base

Jonathan Villar, MIL at SD ($4,500) - Luis Perdomo has played well of late but still has problems against lefties, as indicated by his .591 slugging percentage allowed. Villar has barreled the ball up well against righties, and will carry a 38 percent hard contact rate into this matchup.

Third Base

Ryan Schimpf, SD vs. MIL ($3,800) - Chase Anderson's hard contact rate against lefties continues to soar and is now greater than 45 percent over 13.2 innings. Petco Park has always been forgiving to lefty batters, and Schimpf has tallied a .263 ISO against right-handed pitching.

Shortstop

Carlos Correa, HOU at MIA ($4,900) - Correa has kept a fairly stark reverse split this season, logging a .233 ISO and a 46 percent hard contact rate against right-handed pitchers. While Dan Straily's surface numbers look decent enough, his 38 percent hard contact rate allowed against same-handed hitters may suggest that he is in for a tough matchup, as Houston will line up more than a few powerful righties.

Outfield

Jose Bautista, TOR vs. ATL ($4,400) - Opposing starter Bartolo Colon hasn't scored more than 8.2 DraftKings points in any of his last four outings. While it can be argued that this is an easier matchup than any he had over that span, it is worth noting that his fastball has been worth -7.1 RAA this season. This alone makes Colon an excellent stack target against almost any team, as he throws the pitch at an 84 percent clip.

Marcell Ozuna, MIA vs. HOU ($3,800) - Joe Musgrove has had trouble keeping the ball in the park against righties, as evidenced by his 2.2 HR/9 rate over 20.2 innings. Ozuna has put up a 50 percent hard contact rate from both sides of the platoon, while registering a .300 ISO against righties over 117 at-bats.

Mike Trout, LAA vs. CWS ($5,400) - Mike Pelfrey has yet to last longer than 5.1 innings in a start this season, and hasn't struck out more than two batters in any of those outings. He will take a .552 slugging percentage against righties into the contest against Trout, who has torched right-handed pitchers to the tune of a .427 ISO.
