Yahoo DFS Baseball: Friday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Baseball series.

Pitcher

Jose Quintana, CHC at MIL ($48): Quintana was on a nice little run prior to being dealt to the Cubs, and it's continued, as he has now gone nine-straight starts with three or less earned runs, four times allowing one or fewer. He's struck out 29 over his last 18.1 innings, which seemingly gives him huge potential against a Brewers' offense that leads the league with a 26.5 percent strikeout rate against southpaws.

Jaime Garcia, MIN at OAK ($35): Garcia has been a streaky pitcher over the course of the season but appears to be in one of his better streaks, having allowed four runs while striking out 11 over his last 14 innings and picking up two wins. He's making his American League debut, and with trade winds blowing, he could be on the move again prior to making this start, so he'll at least require monitoring prior to first pitch, which is late Friday night. But assuming he's on the bump, his current form paired with a matchup against a A's offense that is second only to the previously mentioned Brewers with a 26.1 percent strikeout rate give Garcia potential. That Oakland has a .283 wOBA and 7 wRC+ against lefties suggests a nice floor as well, especially at this cost.

Catcher

Austin Barnes, LAD vs. SF ($15): The price is steep for a player who certainly isn't guaranteed to start, but given the high tag, Barnes at least gives plenty of flexibility should he not be in the lineup. Assuming he starts, Barnes brings plenty of upside, owning a .389 wOBA, 143 wRC+ and .297 ISO against lefties. That looks plenty inviting against Giants' starter Matt Moore, who has a 7.61 road ERA while allowing opposite-handed hitters to post a .360 wOBA against.

First Base

Freddie Freeman, ATL vs. PHI ($22): Yes, Freeman ties Edwin Encarnacion as the most expensive at his position. But it's a position with 10 players priced within $3 of that top number, leaving very little variance across the top options. Freeman hasn't missed a beat since returning from the disabled list, owning a .461 wOBA, 185 wRC+ and 1.115 OPS against opposite-handed arms since July 4. Phils' starter Jeremy Hellickson has a 5.14 home ERA while allowing a .342 wOBA to lefties at Citizen's Bank Park.

Second Base

Josh Harrison, PIT at SD ($13): Harrison ranks fourth among Bucs' regulars with a .334 wOBA and 105 wRC+ against righties. That, when paired with the relatively low price and secondary position lend itself to some appeal against a struggling Dinelson Lamet, who has allowed 12 earned runs and 18 hits over his last 14.2 frames. Mix in that Harrison was 9-for-17 over the last four games prior to Thursday, and there's the solid chance Harrison can outperform his price.

Third Base

Manny Machado, BAL at TEX ($17): Machado's July has looked like many expected his entire season to. His price hasn't caught up to his daily potential or current form, which features a .403 wOBA, 153 wRC+ with only a 10.7 percent strikeout rate against righties since July 1. Rangers' starter Andrew Cashner surprisingly, has a 2.50 ERA at home, but Vegas seems to feel as I do, as this game comes with a total of 11, the only current game on the board with a double-digit number.

Shortstop

Carlos Asuaje, SD vs. PIT ($10): Pirates starter Chad Kuhl is simply one of the league's worst starters, carrying a 4.92 ERA while having lasted beyond five innings only six times all year. He's also allowing a .419 wOBA to lefties on the road, playing right in to Asuaje's wheelhouse. Asuaje has a .380 wOBA and 136 wRC+ againt opposite-handed arms.

Outfield

Tommy Pham, STL vs. ARI ($19): Pham has decimated lefties all season, possessing a .430 wOBA, 166 wRC+ and .321 ISO. He has eight multihit games in his last 14 outings, going deep four times in that span. Diamondbacks' starter Robbie Ray has come back to earth a little to boot, allowing a .373 wOBA and 4.76 ERA to righties over his last three starts.

Carlos Gomez, TEX vs. BAL ($16): We've previously touched on this game's total, and the argument can be made it has plenty to do with O's starter Chris Tillman, who has allowed at least three earned runs in every start since his season debut and carries a 12.33 road ERA, where he's allowing lefties to post a .450 wOBA and 1.042 OPS. Gomez sports a .350 wOBA and 115 wRC+ against righties, numbers that trail only Joey Gallo and Adrian Beltre in this lineup, and come at least $4 cheaper.

Corey Dickerson, TAM at NYY ($13): The price here simply seems wrong. Dickerson has a sporty .362 wOBA, 131 wRC+, and .233 ISO against righties, and is 8-for-18 (.474) with three homers against Yankees' starter Masahiro Tanaka. Tanaka has a 4.75 home ERA while allowing a .343 wOBA to lefties, and while he's kept the ball on the ground modestly against them (28.2 percent), he's allowing an obscene 31.0 percent of those fly balls to clear the fence.
