Week 4 FAAB Results

Here's hoping everyone had a great weekend and success in bidding on their free agents. This week is going to be quick - I got backed up due to some personal matters and the holiday, plus an extra podcast with Yahoo's Scott Pianowski today.

The thing that struck me about this week was that there were some pretty big bids on guys that weren't on a lot of radars at the start of the season. Some were maybe thought about in deeper leagues, like Christian Walker and Hunter Dozier, but some didn't get much look unless you went beyond 500 players. That happens with relief pitchers pretty frequently, but I'd venture to guess that it doesn't happen as often with position players. But in 932 NFBC leagues, Ryan Cordell was drafted four times, Michael Chavis 226 times (ADP: ominously 666), Cole Tucker 111 times (ADP: 747) and Mike Tauchman 86 times (ADP: 774).

Jason Collette's big bid on Michael Chavis might have influenced me a little bid on my subsequent bids on him. I wasn't in on him here because I was focused more on adding pitching, but had I been in on him I would have been around $150. I ended up getting Bassitt for his two starts this week, though it made me bummed out that Rick & Glenn got essentially the same commodity in Bañuelos for only $1 after I spent $10.

I put in bids to keep the league honest on Cole Tucker ($95) and Michael Chavis ($75), and somewhat surprisingly in light of the bidding on Chavis in Tout two hours earlier got him by too comfortable of a margin. I like the potential of Chavis, but his long-term playing time is hardly guaranteed and I'm going to need to pace myself for the long run. Buttrey was a bid I was pretty happy with the result - though there's a chance that the Angels could ultimately prefer Hansel Robles over him if/when Cody Allen spits up the job, I like Buttrey's skills. I didn't activate him this week, though, and I also have Diego Castillo stashed. I don't think that situation will be tenable for long.

I needed someone 2B-eligible to protect against the possible absence of Robinson Canó this week, so why not take a flier on a guy that's twice hit two homers in a game already this season. It's pretty clear that the Angels are going to keep playing La Stella against right-handers, and he's doing a good job of taking advantage of the juiced ball. I was also in on Walker and Dozier, but pretty clearly not enough.

Again, protecting against Canó's absence, but I pretty clearly overbid on Wendle. At least he was batting fourth on Monday.

Bidding has been pretty aggressive in this league, so I raised my bids here a little bit and managed to overkill both in getting Chavis and Kelley. Amateur hour, I guess, and I should have been more aggressive on Christian Walker.

I'm at the horns of a dilemma in this league - I'm super light on closers, but I spent a good chunk of my $100 FAAB budget already and don't have the luxury of $0 bids. So when Hector Neris was the obviously closer to bid on in this league, do I use a big chunk and limit myself to only $1-2 bids for most of the season, and then pull my hair out the rest of the way watching Gabe Kapler manage his bullpen? Or do I put in a "keep 'em honest" bid and hope the league feels the same way about Kapler? I went the latter route, bidding only $5, which wasn't close to getting him. I'll need to keep speculating down the road, or trade for a closer, or flat out punt the category.

RotoWire Staff Keeper League

There's nothing worse than getting shut out entirely in a given week, even if you're fighting for scraps in an 18-team mixed league. I should have gone after Jerad Eickhoff - I think I'm going to regret not going harder there, given Nick Pivetta's demotion. My two misses were Danny Santana and Shawn Kelley, who I lost on a standings tiebreaker.
