Yahoo DFS Hockey: Monday Playoff Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

GOALIE

Braden Holtby, WAS at PIT ($31): Both the Jets and Caps can close out their series Monday, but they'll be tough games so Holtby might be a better play than Connor Hellebucyk at a $1 discount for being on the road. Holtby and the Caps have gone 7-2 since he won the No. 1 job back, and the momentum is swinging the Caps' way after suffering a blow to their roster depth with the suspension of Tom Wilson.

GOALIE TO AVOID

Pekka Rinne, NSH at WPG ($27): Quite frankly, playing Rinne on the road against the Jets when he's not at the top of his game is a terrifying notion. Although Rinne is the least expensive starter Monday, he's also arguably the least palatable option. The Preds defense hasn't been very helpful, either, and too often Rinne's been hung out to dry.

CENTER

Paul Stastny, WPG vs. NSH ($19): Brought in to solidify their depth at center, Stastny has been a bit of an offensive revelation in the second round even though he tends to be Paul Maurice's preferred defensive option. Stastny can extend his scoring streak to seven games with a point Monday, and there's very little worry of the Jets offense getting shut out.

Lars Eller, WAS at PIT ($17): If the top two lines cancel each other out, Eller's line is in position to make the biggest difference. With the talented Jakub Vrana playing on his wing, Eller's line now has an element of offensive creativity it previously lacked, and being matched against Riley Sheahan's line isn't exactly intimidating, or even a tough task.

CENTERS TO AVOID

Kyle Turris, NSH at WPG ($14): If there was one aspect of the series in which the Jets have clearly dominated, it's in depth scoring. Turris has been helpful, but not helpful enough to be trusted as a No. 2 center, and for three straight games he's played less than 14 minutes with just three shots in total.

Derick Brassard, PIT vs. WAS ($14): Like Turris, Brassard was brought in to help out at center, but the results have ranged from inconsequential to mixed. In an elimination game Mike Sullivan should be leaning on his top two centers, and at Brassard's current rate of production – one assist in the series – he'll likely be only seeing the ice only when Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin need breathers.

WING

Patrik Laine, WPG vs. NSH ($27): He's registered a point in every game this series, and it also helps that Stastny is on a hot streak. Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers seems to have established some good chemistry with Stastny, giving the Jets the equivalent of another first line. The Predators defense is talented but underperforming, so even though Laine was held without a shot in his last game don't expect it to happen again.

Patric Hornqvist, PIT vs. WAS ($26): One of Hornqvist's most enduring qualities is his ability to score dirty goals. No other forward on the Pens can take as much abuse as Hornqvist in front of the net and also have the ability to score goals; remember, Hornqvist scored the game-winning goal last summer when the puck took a seemingly harmless bounce off the boards, and clean looks will be hard to come by in Game 6 as the Caps try to close out the series.

Kyle Connor, WPG vs. NSH ($22): It just took a little while for the former Michigan Wolverine star to find his footing, but once he did it was a sight to behold as he scored his first two goals of the playoffs and added a highlight-reel assist in Game 5. When all three members of the Jets' top line get going they're impossible to stop, and their ability to generate turnovers has been a big reason they've been doing so well.

WINGS TO AVOID

Phil Kessel, PIT vs. WAS ($25): Kessel was stapled to the bench in the third period of the loss in Game 5 and he's running out of time to find his groove. All four of his points have come on the power play, and so far he has just one goal in the playoffs. He needs to be better at even strength but he hasn't shown much life yet on the ice, making him a risky proposition.

Craig Smith, NSH at WPG ($20): He's never really been known as a sniper, but the Preds need Smith to provide more than just two goals. He's yet to score against the Jets even though the Preds pride themselves on being an evenly balanced team. Smith is very good at putting pucks on net but hasn't looked particularly dangerous at any point.

Brett Connolly, WAS at PIT ($12): He scored a goal in Game 5, but in reality, the 2010 first-round pick is just a checking line player. He gets limited ice time and registered just two shots in three games, and while the difference between winning and losing may be depth, there are better gambles such as Jakub Vrana ($13).

DEFENSE

John Carlson, WAS at PIT ($26): Carlson's at the point in his career where the Caps should be willing to move bodies to retain him in the offseason, and both of his goals in the series have come at key moments. He's slowly developed into the No. 1 two-way defenseman the Caps have always coveted, and he's a big reason why they're on the brink of closing out the Pens. If Pittsburgh starts to unravel again, Carlson has also been especially potent on the power play.

Dustin Byfuglien, WPG vs. NSH ($24): If Byfuglien was an actual jet he'd be the Airbus, and he's been flattening the Predators all series. After scoring zero goals against the Wild, he's scored four goals in this series, but what is more impressive is that he's finished with a negative plus-minus just once all playoffs. Byfuglien scored two goals and an assist in Game 3, when the Jets played at home for the first time in the series and Paul Maurice could get him the best matchups.

DEFENSEMEN TO AVOID

Roman Josi, NSH at WPG ($25): He just hasn't looked right in the playoffs, and after dominating the regular season he has just two assists in 11 games. The Preds are lucky their defense is deep, because if Josi was their only elite defenseman they would've started golfing long ago. P.K. Subban is doing a much better job of generating offense, so he'll likely get more offensive zone opportunities than Josi.

Kris Letang, PIT vs. WAS ($23): He's struggled in the second round much like Josi, and the Pens look like they may start playing Justin Schultz more on the power play. If that happens, Letang's value takes a hit because that's traditionally where he's been the most effective. Letang is minus-5 in the series and has scored just one goal.
