FanDuel NHL: Thursday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel NHL series.

GOALIE

Carey Price, MON vs. LOS ($8,100): It's only been two games, so we don't know if Price is "back" yet. However, he has a .917 save percentage even though his two starts have been on the road against the Maple Leafs and Penguins. The Kings, who scored 2.89 goals per game last year, should be a tad easier. Also, with Jonathan Quick hurt, the Canadiens have a chance to get the win at home.

CENTER

Eric Staal, MIN vs. CHI ($6,900): I don't believe Staal is going to score 42 goals again, but he doesn't need to in order to have a big fantasy year. He's still playing a healthy chunk of minutes, including on the power play, and he's had more than 200 shots on net in each of his seasons with the Wild. Corey Crawford is hurt, which makes Cam Ward the number-one goal for the Blackhawks. That would be the same Ward who hasn't had a save percentage above .910 since the 2011-12 season.

Nico Hischier, NJD vs. WAS ($6,000): In his rookie season, Hischier started 60.4 percent of his shifts in the offensive zone, highest among Devils forwards. He had an impressive showing for an 18-year-old, notching 20 goals and 32 assists. The Capitals are going to be on the road for the second night of a back-to-back, and have already announced Pheonix Copley will be their starter. At the AHL level last year, he had a 2.91 GAA and .896 save percentage, which is not exactly encouraging.

WING

Evander Kane, SJ at NYR ($6,800): Shots are the name of the game for Kane. He had 307 last season, and usually is a lock for over 250 as long as he stays reasonably healthy. To that end, he's put 21 shots on goal through for games, and he's notched four goals as a result. The Rangers allowed 35.3 shots on net per contest last season, so you can probably do the math on this matchup.

Jaden Schwartz, STL vs. CGY ($6,300): Schwartz was on his way to having a great season before getting hurt, as he had 24 goals on 62 games. The 26-year-old also averaged 3:13 per game on the power play, notching 11 points with the extra man. Mike Smith stumbled down the stretch last season, and the 36-year-old may have trouble holding up. He did post a shutout in his last start, but he still has a .906 save percentage through three games.

Nick Foligno, CBJ at FLA ($5,600): Last year was something of a lot season for Foligno, although a lot of that can be chalked up to the fact he had only four power-play points despite averaging 2:23 minutes per game with the extra man. The season prior, he had 21. The Panthers allowed 34.6 shots on net per game last season, and Roberto Luongo is hurt. That leaves James Reimer, who had a 2.99 GAA and .913 save percentage last year, as their de facto starter.

DEFENSE

Morgan Rielly, TOR at DET ($5,700): Rielly has been the hottest defenseman in the NHL to start the year. He's notched 10 points already, including five on the power play. There's reason to believe in him as well, as he had 52 points last season. Jimmy Howard, on the other hand, had a 2.85 GAA and .910 save percentage last year.

Ryan McDonagh, TB vs. VAN ($4,800): McDonagh struggled after being traded to the Lightning last season, but this time around he had a whole offseason to adjust to his new team. In the one game he played this year he seemed to fit in, as he had an assist and five shots on net. The Canucks had a 3.16 GAA last year, and this season Jacob Markstrom has a 4.02 GAA and .883 save percentage.
