Yahoo DFS Hockey: Thursday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

GOALIE

Marc-Andre Fleury, VGK at OTT ($34): Fleury only has a .901 save percentage, but we have a lot of years of track record that indicate that will surely improve. Plus, thanks to the defense in front of him, he still has a 2.47 GAA. The Senators have scored 3.47 goals per game, but they've put a mere 28.9 shots on net per contest. That level of scoring is not going to continue at that rate.

GOALIE TO AVOID

Robin Lehner, NYI at TAM ($34): Lehner has gotten off to an impressive start, as he has a 2.45 GAA and .928 save percentage. However, he had a 3.01 GA and .908 save percentage last year, so I'm skeptical he can keep this up. Plus, he hasn't played in three games due to issues with back spasms. A matchup against a Lightning team that has averaged 3.60 goals and 34.6 shots on net per game could be a dose of reality for Lehner.

CENTER

Jonathan Toews, CHI vs. CAR ($24): Toews "only" had 20 goals last year, but he already has eight this season, thanks in part to the fact he's put 46 shots on net through 15 games. Additionally, he has only two power-play points despite averaging 3:16 per contest with the extra man. The Hurricanes have an .876 save percentage, and they also have the 29th-ranked penalty kill.

CENTER TO AVOID

Elias Pettersson, VAN at BOS ($19): Yes, Pettersson is an exciting rookie, and will probably win the Calder. He also has a 35.7 shooting percentage, and that's not going to continue. The Bruins will be starting Jaroslav Halak, who has a 1.45 GAA and .952 save percentage. Those numbers are also unsustainable, but the Bruins have a 2.21 GAA overall, so it's not all about Halak's crazy numbers.

WING

Reilly Smith, VGK at OTT ($19): Smith has six points through 15 games, but he has an 8.6 shooting percentage, which is the lowest of his career. He's averaged 20:08 per game in ice time, and 3:21 on the power play, so he's getting the most minutes of his career. That could pay off big time in this matchup, as the Senators have a 4.13 GAA, highest in the NHL.

Mike Hoffman, FLA vs. EDM ($18): Hoffman was mired in controversy this offseason, but he's trying to make people forget that with his play on the ice. He's got six goals through 11 games, and he's put a whopping 42 shots on goal as well. The Oilers have a 3.07 GAA, and have the 26th-ranked penalty kill as well. On top of everything else, Hoffman has averaged 4:05 per contest on the power play.

WINGS TO AVOID

Jakub Voracek, PHI vs. ARI ($21): Voracek is off to a strong start to the season, although his 10.3 shooting percentage would be his highest since the straight-shortened 2012-12 campaign. This is quite the tough matchup, though, as the Coyotes have a 2.23 GAA. Voracek also has been a player who has done most of his damage on the power play in his career, and Arizona has the league's top penalty kill.

Josh Bailey, NYI at TAM ($19): Despite the loss of John Tavares, Bailey is still putting up good numbers. He has 15 points through 14 games, though he's only put 25 shots on goal. However, Andrei Vasilevskiy has a 1.98 GAA and .935 save percentage, and he had a .920 save percentage last year. Plus, the Lightning have the second-ranked penalty kill, and seven of Bailey's points have come with the extra man.

DEFENSE

Shea Theodore, VGK at OTT ($18): Theodore actually ranks second on the Golden Knights in shots on goal, as he's put 39 pucks on net through 15 games. Meanwhile, the Senators have allowed a staggering 39.1 shots on goal per contest. On top of that, as previously noted Ottawa has a 4.13 GAA, and the Vegan defenseman has five points in his last six games.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson, ARI at PHI ($17): Ekman-Larsson has eight points to start the year, even though he only has one goal on 31 shots. That should improve, especially since he has at least six power-play goals in each of his last five seasons. The Flyers have the 30th-ranked penalty kill, so the Swedish defensemen's prowess with the extra man could come into play.

DEFENSE TO AVOID

John Klingberg, DAL vs. SAN ($22): Klingberg has 13 points this season, although he has only one goal in his last 10 games. The Sharks have only allowed 28.5 shots on goal per contest, so he may have a hard time amending that. Additionally, six of the Swede's points have come on the power play, and San Jose has the third-ranked penalty kill.

Drew Doughty, LOS vs. MIN ($21): Doughty only has one goal this season, and his shooting is down. He has only 24 shots on goal through 14 games. Six of his points have come with the extra man as well. The Wild also have a great penalty kill so far, as they rank fourth. Plus, Devan Dubnyk has a 2.25 GAA and .930 save percentage.
