Smith was designated for waivers by the Leafs on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Smith logged 36 games for Toronto last year in which he tallied two goals and a pair of assists. The winger was fighting for a spot on the 23-man roster and apparently lost out. Assuming he clears waivers, the 29-year-old will join AHL Toronto, but given his experience, should be on the short list of potential call-ups during the season.

Smith finally stayed healthy last season and took full advantage, delivering 14 goals and 12 assists in 75 games. What was more important was that he was healthy after battling through injuries in his first three seasons. Smith's best quality is his versatility -- he can play wing or center. If he continues to stay healthy, Smith will be able to top his 2013-14 output and may even be able to get 35 points.
Smith can play -- he's fast and gutsy -- but he will be once again be in tough to earn a regular spot with the Hawks. The team's bottom-six depth is significant. He's coming off endoscopic hip surgery, but swears he'll be ready to compete in camp. Still, watch for him to start the season in the AHL.
Smith made a big impact in the postseason with three goals, including the game-winning goal in Game 6 against the Canucks, pushing the series to seven games. He went from play for Boston College the season before to skating in six games in the regular season and scoring one goal. Smith should get a bump to make the team this season after his postseason, but he will have to show the team that the playoff numbers were not a fluke.
Smith is a smart player who recently completed four years with the Boston College Eagles, never missing out on a contest for the 2010 national champions of Hockey East. The Blackhawks signed him to a two-year deal last April.
