Karel Rachunek: Killed in Plane Crash
DFree Agent
September 7, 2011
Rachunek, a member of the KHL's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, was among the 43 passengers killed in Wednesday's plane crash, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
ANALYSIS
Rachunek last played for an NHL team during the 2007-08 season as a New Jersey Devil. He broke into the NHL with the Ottawa Senators during the 2000-01 season and also spent time with the New York Rangers. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the 43 victims of the plane crash. Also dying in the crash were former NHL players Ruslan Salei, Pavol Demitra, Josef Vasicek and Karlis Skrastins.

Rachunek will get a chance to start anew with the Devils after falling out of favor on Broadway. He has some offensive ability but might not show the flash he did while with Ottawa. Rachunek should see some power play time and 30 points isn't out of the question, but 25-27 seem more likely for the big veteran.
Rachunek comes back to the NHL after playing the last two seasons in Russia; he now has a great chance to be part of the Rangers' blue line nucleus. If all goes according to plan, the skilled Rachunek could crack the Blueshirts’ top four defensemen pairing, depending on how he performs in camp.
Rachunek's play dipped quite a bit after being traded to the Rangers late in the 2003-04 season. With Ottawa, he scored a fair number of points for a defenseman and had a great plus/minus. He will look to recapture that play on New York's second line this season.
