After a collegiate career with the University of Minnesota, Hoeffel has a combined 11 points over 50 AHL contests with Albany the last two seasons. New Jersey's checking lines are a crowded place, and Hoeffel probably won't make an offensive impact should he see any time with the big club.
Hoeffel registered two goals in 10 AHL games with Albany after leaving the University of Minnesota where he had 24 points in 35 games during his senior season. Hoeffel is behind a handful of players on the team's depth chart and will likely start the season in the AHL.
The Devils snatched up Hoeffel with a second-round draft pick in 2007. With enough seasoning in the lower leagues, this sizable forward could be a useful second-line player for the Devils. But that will be put on hold, at least in 2010-11, as he will be shooting pucks for the University of Minnesota.
Hoeffel has good size -- he's 6-2 and 186 pounds -- and he put in 16 goals and 23 points in 44 games with the U.S. Under-18 Development Team. He has some potential, perhaps even as high as the second line, and he'll be given plenty of time to nurture it. The Devils almost always allow their young talent to mature before they hit the bigs. After all, it's easier on the salary cap that way, too.
