Ryan is a defensive specialist who thinks the game well. He does have a few offensive chops, but his career apex will lie on the third line, and that's a long, long way off. Ryan split his time between the ECHL and AHL last season; it's reasonable expect more of the same this time out.
What more to do you need to know about Ryan than his childhood idol? It's the gritty and hard-working Darren McCarty, who had a successful career (and won a few Cups) as a grunt on the Detroit Red Wings. Ryan has generally failed to impress in the OHL despite having a shooter's mentality and a really accurate shot. He uses his size (6-0, 210) well along the boards and in front of the net but like McCarty, his future lies on a 'grind' line. Your league format will dictate his ultimate fantasy value but suffice to say keeper leaguers shouldn't waste a roster spot -- wait until he arrives in three or four years and then consider him.
Ryan has good size, works hard and has a real nose for the net. But you have to consider him a long-term prospect who needs some significant development time.
Ryan is boy Friday -- good at pretty much everything but not great at any one thing. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have skill -- he does. He's fast with great hands, and his shot is heavy and hard. He plays fast and hard, and isn't afraid to drop the gloves, either. But he's a long, long way away.
