No huge surprise here. The 24-year-old center has appeared in just 45 games at the AHL level, so he could use some additional seasoning before getting a legit shot with the Maple Leafs.

Irwin impressed in the playoffs this past season … in the ECHL, that is. The big (6-5, 223) 25-year-old is running out of time to demonstrate he deserves an NHL job. He might have earned a job with the AHL Marlies this season, though. Who knows, he might make it some day.
Irwin didn't exactly live up to the hype following his free agent signing in 2010. The skinny beanpole (6-5, 205) delivered just seven goals and 15 points in 45 games and will need to ratchet up his game significantly to earn anything more than a minor league contract next time out.
Irwin is a big, big boy (6-5 and 215 pounds) with a really quick release. But he's running on tires made in China and not high-performance rubber. And that means he may not be able to keep up with the big boys in the NHL. He'll work on his game in the A this season.
