Persson signed a two-year contract Wednesday to play with Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.
ANALYSIS
Persson's contract with the Islanders was set to expire this summer, and he decided a return to Europe represented a better opportunity than sticking around as a depth player at the AHL level. He did play 10 games with the Islanders in 2013-14, but has mainly been an organizational depth player and will not be missed.

Persson finally got a taste of the NHL last season but that was because of a run of injuries that the Isles suffered. He won't begin this season with the Islanders but will rather be back with Brigdeport. He is not considered a top prospect and although he could get called up once again should the need arise, it won't be as a top-six forward.
Persson had 17 goals and 29 points for Bridgeport of the AHL last season. Although he has no chance to start the season with the Islanders, he could be called up eventually should he continue his hot play or if the team suffers a rash of injuries.
Persson played a handful of games for Bridgeport last season and will play a full season at the AHL level this year. He lacks big size but makes up for it with a willingness to do what it takes to get the job done. He is a solid two-way player who could see some spot duty with the big club this season.
Persson signed an entry-level contract with the Islanders in May of 2012.
