Holzapfel logged a full season for AHL Wilkes-Barre in 2012-13, suiting up for 76 contests. He put up his strongest minor-league stats, with 21 goals and 51 points, but didn't get a callup at any point of the season. Holzapfel, who chipped in with 10 points in 15 Baby Penguins playoff games, is still only 25. The fact that the former second-round Thrashers draft pick didn't get at least a couple games in with Pittsburgh shows how the organization values him. In any case, he'll need to continue putting up solid AHL numbers to get another crack at the big time.
Unfulfilled expectations describe Holzapfel's career since coming out of the WHL in the second round of the 2006 draft. The 24-year-old centerman has bounced around, playing for three different AHL teams in the last two seasons. Unless he catches fire with a fantastic season for the Wilkes-Barre Baby Pens, it's unlikely he makes his NHL debut in 2012-13.
Holzapfel has spent the last 2 seasons playing for the Thrashers’ AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves. His production dropped to just 7 goals and 23 assists in 2009-10 as Holzapfel played more of a two-way game last season. Though there is no doubt he possesses a scoring touch and considerable skill, Holzapfel’s chances of making the NHL with the Thrashers are pretty slim, considering the young talent he’ll have to beat out to earn a roster spot.
Holzapfel was picked 43rd overall by the Thrashers at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He's another small winger in the Thrashers system he is a few years away from fantasy relevance.
The 43rd overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft is still a long way away from the NHL. Don't expect to see him for the next few years.
Skinny guy alert! At 5'11" but only 170 lbs, Holzapfel will need to pack on some pounds to survive in the NHL. He's a double-threat on offense as he can set up linemates and light the lamp equally well. He projects as a second-line center in the bigs if he can put on some weight.
