Yahoo DFS Hockey: Sunday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

Sunday's evening slate consists of just four games, with seven others taking place during the day. Taking advantage of matchups will be key, but you can find value on some of the underdogs if you just know where to look.

GOALIE

Jonathan Quick, LOS vs. ARI ($34): Quick has held each of his past 10 opponents to two or fewer goals, and should have little problem extending that streak against a Coyotes team that has scored just 2.33 goals per game. The biggest knock on his value when healthy this season has been Los Angeles' inability to score enough goals in support, but that shouldn't be an issue considering Arizona's generous defense has given up 3.18 goals per contest. Quick's play since returning from a groin injury merits more than a $34 investment on its own, so getting him at that price against this opponent is a downright steal.

Goalie to Avoid

Martin Jones, SJ at VAN ($34): This matchup against a poor Canucks offense might be just what Jones needs to turn things around, but his horrific recent play also gives the Sharks netminder greater downside than your usual $34 option. He has just one win with 21 goals allowed and an .842 save percentage over his past five appearances, and is far from guaranteed to pick up a win for a struggling Sharks team that's missing Logan Couture (mouth).

CENTER

Brayden Schenn, PHI at NYR ($15): Those looking to take advantage of Henrik Lundqvist's recent struggles and New York's lackluster penalty kill without breaking the bank should look Schenn's way. He costs just $15 despite posting 52 points this season, 27 of which have come with the extra man. He's only one back of the league lead with 16 power-play goals, and he'll have a great chance to erase that deficit against a Rangers penalty kill that ranks 23rd at 79.4 percent, especially with the struggling Lundqvist having allowed 13 goals in three games since returning from a hip injury.

Center to Avoid

Ryan Getzlaf, ANH at CGY ($20): Getzlaf didn't look quite right in Thursday's loss to the Jets after missing one game due to a lower-body injury, tying a season-low with minus-3.0 fantasy points. Improving his form won't be easy against red-hot Flames goaltender Brian Elliott, who has held 15 of his past 19 opponents to two or fewer goals while posting a 15-1-1 record over his last 17 decisions.

WING

Brock Boeser, VAN vs. SJ ($16): Boeser has flashed serious talent with two goals on 14 shots in his first four NHL appearances. His 3.5 shots per game puts the 2015 first rounder in between Patrick Kane's and Vladimir Tarasenko's season averages, so it's no surprise that his ice time has already been raised as high as 19:55 on Friday against the Kings. Boeser can still be had at an affordable rate despite that early success, and is primed to capitalize on this matchup considering Jones' aforementioned recent struggles.

Rick Nash, NYR vs. PHI ($19): Improved health and confidence have Nash in the midst of his most productive stretch of the season. The power forward is over the 20-goal mark for the 12th time in 14 NHL campaigns thanks to five goals in his past six games, and has a golden opportunity to add another one against a Flyers team that has allowed 2.87 goals per game. This combinations of pedigree, momentum and matchup can rarely be found in the sub-$20 range, so take advantage of the opportunity while you can.

Wings to Avoid

Michael Frolik, CGY vs. ANH ($17): Frolik's production has really slowed down late in the season, as evidenced by his mere two points and 4.3 fantasy point per game average over the past 10 games. Don't expect a reversal of fortune against a Ducks team that has allowed just 2.43 goals per game.

Nick Ritchie, ANH at CGY ($16): Ritchie's third-line role isn't offering him enough playing time to justify his $16 price. He has played fewer than 13 minutes in nine of the past 10 games, and that likely won't be enough for him to make much of an impact against Elliott and the Flames.

DEFENSE

Drew Doughty, LA vs. ARI ($20): Doughty's season ice time average of 27:11 ranks second in the league, which means he'll have no shortage of chances to contribute across the board against a Coyotes team that ranks among the bottom six in goals for, goals against, power play percentage and penalty kill percentage. The 2016 Norris Trophy winner has a high ceiling to go with his excellent floor, as he's over the 40-point mark this season for the sixth time and is just one goal shy of reaching double-digits in that category for the sixth time as well. His Kings team missing the playoffs this season doesn't take away from Doughty's ability to shine as an individual, especially against weaker foes like this one.

Brady Skjei, NYR vs. PHI ($17): Skjei has already racked up a goal and three assists in three games since turning 23, and has a great chance to stay hot against the defensively-challenged Flyers. He has put together a tremendous rookie campaign with 38 points and a plus-7 rating to date, so another strong two-way performance is likely in the cards given Philadelphia's struggles at even strength. Just like Doughty, Skjei offers a combination of dependability and upside unmatched in his price range, especially if Ryan McDonagh sits again.

Defensemen to Avoid

Alexander Edler, VAN vs. SJ ($17): Edler has just 20 points and a minus-16 rating, yet still costs $17. Even against a struggling Sharks team, his low ceiling and high risk make the Swede a poor play.

Alex Goligoski, ARI at LA ($15): As Arizona's most expensive defenseman, Goligoski carries the largest risk on the team despite coming with a lower ceiling than the offensively-minded Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Both are unlikely to find much success against Los Angeles given Quick's recent play, while the Coyotes' underdog status puts each of the team's members at risk of racking up negative points with poor performances in the rating category.
