Sunday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway featured a throwback theme, and Denny Hamlin made the right moves to come out on top for his second win of the weekend. His misstep earlier in the race of missing the pit road entry made the task of winning a bit more difficult, but he was still able to get the job done. Martin Truex Jr. used pit strategy to stay out longer than Hamlin in the final miles, but Hamlin’s fresher tires, despite the pit road miss, proved too much for Truex to handle. Still, Truex won both the first and second stages of the race, which earned him the regular-season championship and extra playoff points that will serve him well once the elimination rounds get underway after this week’s race at Richmond Raceway.
