FanDuel MLB: Friday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Edinson Volquez, KC vs HOU ($8,100): It's hard to find a starting pitcher with a greater discrepancy between his home (2.61 ERA) and away (6.82 ERA) splits as Volquez. Luckily he's at home tonight and gets a good, not great matchup against the Astros. Houston is 13th in the league in wOBA against right-handed pitching but has the third-most strikeouts, whiffing at a 24.5 percent clip. Volquez has scored at least 21 fantasy points in his last six starts at home and there are nine other pitchers with a higher price toeing the rubber tonight. Saving $3,800 compared to Max Scherzer here will allow more bats into your lineup from the Colorado/Arizona game.

Catcher

Willson Contreras, CHI at MIA ($2,500): Contreras was hitting in the cleanup spot last night and has three outstanding hitters in front of him, making that a fortuitous spot to hit. Tonight's opposing pitcher, Tom Koehler, has been better as of late but isn't a pitcher to shy away from fading. Contreras has reached base safely in each of his first five games and has two home runs after posting a 1.035 OPS at Triple-A including four stolen bases.

First Base

John Jaso, PIT vs LAD ($2,900): Jaso has been a fixture in the leadoff spot against right-handed pitching and been a logical choice when looking at his .350 OBP (.380 OBP last season). Nick Tepesch is making his first start of the season for the Dodgers on the road so this should be a plus matchup for Jaso. Also, Jaso has some limited success against Tepesch, going 3-for-8 with two doubles and a home run against him.

Second Base

Devon Travis, TOR at CHI ($3,200): Travis has finally started to find his stroke at the plate and has at least 9.2 fantasy points in six of his last nine games. Last season he was much better against left-handed pitching with a .974 OPS. With Jose Bautista out Travis has moved up in the batting order and should have lefty-killers Josh Donaldson and Edwin Encarnacion hitting behind him. Carlos Rodon has struggled mightily against right-handed batters this season with a .361 wOBA against them and that's pretty close to being in line with his .350 mark last season.

Third Base

Chase Headley, NYY vs MIN ($2,900): This looks like a peculiar pick on the surface, but diving into the numbers suggests otherwise. Headley has finally come around at the plate for the Yankees and has a .929 OPS over the last week for the team. He has at least nine fantasy points in seven of his last 10 games and gets a favorable matchup against Tommy Milone (5.79 ERA) tonight.

Shortstop

Stephen Drew, WAS at MIL ($2,700): Drew always seems to be the forgotten National given they have a roster that includes Bryce Harper, Wilson Ramos and Daniel Murphy. Drew has put together a nice run of games and has scored 6, 9.5, 18.7, 16.2, 28.2 and 21.7 fantasy points over his last six contests. Drew has a .365 wOBA this season against right-handed pitching and gets Kyle Davies tonight who has given up a .323 wOBA against lefties this season. Just check and make sure Drew is in the lineup before considering him.

Outfield

Michael Conforto, NYM at ATL ($2,700): Conforto has been in a slump lately with a .132 batting average over the last month. Luckily those numbers do come with three home runs and the matchup is ideal for him to hit another tonight, as Aaron Blair should be the perfect remedy for him. Blair has given up a .388 wOBA this season to left-handed hitters putting Conforto's teammate, Curtis Granderson, in play as well. However, Conforto has a .366 wOBA against right-handed pitching this season and will cost $1,000 less than Curtis.

Giancarlo Stanton, MIA vs CHI ($3,300): This price seems way too cheap for a player who has as much upside as anyone not named Paul Goldschmidt tonight. Stanton has likely been battling some injuries until this point but has looked completely different at the plate over the last week. He's scored at least 15.4 fantasy points in four of his last six games and while Kyle Hendricks looks like a bad matchup, that isn't completely true. Hendricks sports a 4.36 road ERA this season and his worst split is his road wOBA against right-handed hitting with a .314 mark.

Stephen Piscotty, STL at SEA ($3,500): Piscotty has typically been in the cleanup spot for the Cardinals and has absolutely crushed left-handed pitching since joining the big club. He has a crazy .511 wOBA this season against southpaws and gets a great matchup against Wade LeBlanc tonight. LeBlanc is another pitcher making his first start of the season in the big league and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2014. It's hard to imagine him having a productive outing even in the pitcher-friendly confines of Safeco Field.
