Rountree was unable to repeat his standout sophomore season as a junior, but still finished 10th in the conference in rushing. While unable to top the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the second-straight year, Rountree still ran for 829 yards for the Tigers. He also continued to show a nose for the goal line, plunging nine times into the end zone. That means Rountree has scored 20 touchdowns over his last two seasons. Tyler Badie still lurks in the background and will steal some rushes from Rountree, but Rountree remains the starter, should receive the majority of the workload out of the backfield, and his penchant for finding the end zone certainly gives him value at the running back position.
Rountree finished fourth among SEC running backs in 2018, and that was while he was sharing carries with senior Damarea Crockett. Now that Crockett is gone, the runway is clear for Rountree to take on the lion’s share of the backfield work for the Tigers. Having a running threat in Kelly Bryant at quarterback will keep defenses honest, and Rountree himself is a talented back with the build (5-10, 210) to withstand 200-plus carries once again. Look for Rountree to be among the leaders in carries, yards, and touchdowns in the SEC.
Rountree managed to eclipse the 100-yard mark just once in 2017, rushing for 703 yards and six scores on the year. Although he doesn’t pose much of a threat as a pass catcher, the sophomore back rarely coughs up the ball, and he offers additional value as a kick returner. Rountree is in a position to start the upcoming season as the primary tailback, but Damarea Crockett and Dawson Downing will likely join the mix in the backfield, potentially stealing some production. If new offensive coordinator Derek Dooley doesn't tinker too much with Missouri's scheme, there will be enough plays run to where Rountree will still see enough carries to produce decent numbers even if he cedes some work to other backs.
