Past Fantasy Outlooks

2003
At press time Christiansen was still a free agent. Wherever he lands he's not likely to provide much value. Typically bullpen lefties who allow a batting average of .280 vs. LHB aren't at the top of many draft wish lists.
After elbow surgery in 2002, Christiansen spent most of 2003 rehabilitating his arm. He made it back in June 2004 and became one of the Giants' more reliable middle relievers. He's expected back in the bullpen for a stronger, more prominent role in 2005.
Christiansen returned from Tommy John surgery, but fought with scar tissue and his command during the season. He didn't get righties out last year - he has had success against them in the past - despite which he's been used almost exclusively as a specialist. While he has little fantasy value, Christiansen is a good pitcher who should be back all the way in 2004.
Christiansen had Tommy John surgery in May, 2002. He might pitch again in 2003, but in cases like this, pitchers don't usually regain full effectiveness – if they ever do – until 18 months after surgery. In that case, keep him off your draft lists in 2003; hopefully, he'll be effective again by 2004.
